At the rate LCD monitors are inexpensive these days it's just as well to buy a new monitor. You can get a decent 19inch LCD for under $200.00. I suggest buying them at your local store instead of buying from a online retailer. Because most online retailers have a dead pixel policy. I think Newegg has a 8 dead pixel policy which means you'll have to have that many dead pixels before you can return it. If you go to a local store you have 14 days to return for Office Depot and other stores have similar policies. I have yet to see a local store carry a dead pixel policy.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DON'T DO IT - There is very high voltage DC - over 30,000 Volts - in the Picture Tube and Horizontal Flyback Transformer that can KILL you!!! There is also 110 volts AC in the power supply that may not kill you, but it will definitely hurt you!!

What you are describing is probably a loose or failing ground inside the chassis - I had a CRT monitor that went blank on me when I touched the front of the glass.

It's best to pick up a used monitor - they are very cheap, or even free - if you want to keep using a CRT monitor, but I would recommend getting an LCD monitor.

Just a few questions to try to isolate a power issue from a signal problem or a bios/window setting.

Is there a led light that goes green to yellow when this happens or does it just shut off?

When it goes from black to having a picture does it do it quickly and smoothly or do you hear a coil sound and it lights up slowly?

Have you checked your bios power saving settings and related windows options to see if any peripheral shut off or hibernate options are activated?

ya im saving for LCD. but i can't seem to part with that old crt monitor it was my first hard earned monitor
the led light is still green.

it goes black quickly.sometimes i can see horizontal lines ======= across my monitor. when i tap it gently sometimes i goes back to normal.

i don't think its hibernating but i will check my bios later.

i opened it and dust it little bit yesterday. luckily didn't electricuted.
Ya i read somewhere that it is full of voltage so i was cautious. Even if it is unplugged?

I've seen about 20 of those in the dumpster since 2000...
If you're serious about video, you certainly shouldn't be using an old crt

  7. I was told by an old TV tech that there was enough voltage stored to kill you DAYS after the monitor had been unplugged. Have not thoroughly tested this.

We stopped repairing monitors several years ago as it was just not cost-effective. Have picked up several working 17" CRT for free or for $10.00 or less.
