Looking for a Win XP util (or a set of utils combined into one) that possibly does all of the following things:

    1) connects to my DV camcorder and receives the incoming DV stream via firewire (like most standard DV capturing programs)

    2) Allows me to choose a compressor such as XVID, for instance, to set the quality of the output file.

    3) Can re-compress 1) to 2) on the fly (e.g., the way WMM does things: DV->WMV).

    4) Reports if any frames were dropped (the way DVIO.exe does).

If no such app exists, is there any way to setup something like GraphEdit to accomplish any of this?

I would like to stop using WMM for capturing DV footage in compressed form (WMV), but I can't find a suitable substitute.

WMV is generally fine, but there are a number of issues with that format, as well as the fact that it sometimes appears to drop frames, resulting in missing footage.

    Thanks.

A Pentium M 1.8 is probably too weak to do xvid encoding real time.

    Ok, Thanks.

So, WMM manages just fine (2.1 MBps CBR setting), although, granted, it does ride my CPU rather heavily.

Is there something else, perhaps, that's of comparable quality (doesn't have to be XVID necessarily), but is AVI based, so I can edit in VirtualDub, if necessary?
