I've never noticed any speed increase using SATA optical drives. A optical drive doesn't need as much bandwidth as a hard drive, so the interface speed is not really a issue. They both should operate at the same speed.

But a SATA drive does have the advantages of not needing Master/Slave jumpers and using smaller cables that improve case airflow. The Parallel IDE (PATA) interface is on it's way out. Many newer motherboards only have one PATA connector for two drives. And many newer motherboards have four to eight SATA connections. PCI add-on SATA controllers are also reasonably priced.

SATA is cheaper to manufacture than IDE. Therefore IDE is going away. I'll stick with IDE as long as I keep my older computers, replacing IDE drives with IDE drives as long as I can. Even if I pay a little more. Less change is better where there are no major advantages to be had.

When I deploy a new computer it is likely to have all SATA drives.

The last two builds I've done have been exclusively SATA hard drives. The latest one boasts a SATA DVD burner too - but that motherboard has only one IDE slot.

redwudz is correct (from my limited experience, anyway) about fewer IDE slots and more SATA recepticles. That kind of bites in that I picked up a couple of 320GB IDE drives recently on a closeout. I can, however, put them in stand-alone enclosures and use them that way.

I haven't had a minute's trouble with any of my SATA stuff - fingers crossed.

Same here. Although my latest PC is SATA there may come a time when I need to swap drives with the older PC.

If you are getting faster burns it is not because you are using SATA.

I have used both in the same machine, no real difference's. I would get which ever drive that you have an open slot for.....Good luck

The speed's in the drive spec not the connector.

SATA can possibly keep it fed faster than IDE however that's moot as I have both connectors with 18x drives and they work same speed just fine.
