First time posting in this section..

I recently lost one of my burners which was an IDE and I've been looking on Newegg.com for a new one but I'm not sure which would be better, IDE or SATA?? Or does it matter?

Also if someone could suggest a good brand for me that would be great. I was looking at the Liteon brand because it had a bunch of buyers.

I will be using it mostly for burning DVD's. I will also be using it quite a bit so if someone could suggest one that is good with stress. I'm not interested in the high end one's, just one thats about $25 or less would be great.

Also, I burn my DVD's at about 8-12X because someone once told me that doing it maxed out may cause a file to skip or the quality to be worse...Myth??

With optical drives, doesn't make much, if any, difference with performance if it's SATA or PATA. SATA is more common now and with the smaller cables and no jumper setup, a bit easier to install.

Slower burning speed improvements are mostly a myth, IMO. I tend to burn one speed down from the manufactures rated disc burning speed. 16X burned at 12X. Much slower is just a waste of time. But I never had any disc problems burning at 16X either. With DL discs, I burn at full speed as they are slow enough to burn even with that.

    16x media @ 12x-8x is optimum
    8x @ 6x-4x
    4x @ 4x
    2x @ 2x or 1x
    1x @ 1x
DVD recorders are realtime, not 1x

    Anything else is myth, yes. --- i.e. 16x @ 4x or 2x is stupid.

Burning 16x media @ 1x-4x is just as bad as burning 16x media @ 18x-24x
There is a such thing as too slow.

This is addressed in the blank media guides.

Lower quality media, which in North America pretty much means anything not Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim, may have fewer problems if burned slower. We've had reports from users that lower quality discs are often coasters at max speed burning but burning at 8x or 4x makes the burn complete successfully and the disc is watchable. If you burn slower at worst it just takes longer to burn and may not be necessary (the point is arguable and I don't feel like arguing for or against the practice) but it does not have any negative consequences other than just taking more time.

lordsmurf - Your link doesn't work. It gives "Service Unavailable".

There was apparently an issue some years ago where 16x media may have been manufactured as inferior to 8x media. Supposedly this problem existed with good old reliable Taiyo Yuden. But I think it's no longer an issue.

IDE/PATA is pretty old technology at this point. It hasn't disappeared, but there seems to be a real tendency to make less and less that supports it. I suppose it depends on how long you intend to keep the computer and price as to which way to go.

You all seem to know a lot about this So far I have that SATA may be best, burning a little faster than I have been wouldn't hurt, and that Pioneer may be a good brand to go with.

If there is anything else that I could learn about them to help me with my burning or any brand that is preferred than I would love to here it.

Thanks for all the help guys.

The Sony looks like a great buy, thanks. I'm keeping it bookmarked for now.

I have another question, I use DVDFab to put movies on my computer and then I use DVD Shrink to back the movies up onto a disc. The quality of the movies are pretty good but with some you can notice that it's been copied... I was wondering if there are any other programs that might be best for burning or if they all mostly burn movies with about the same quality??

  10. If you want the best quality then make a 1:1 copy using DVD+R DL.

I feel like a noob at this because I didn't even know they made them that big But thanks, I'll be sure to get my hands on some of those

I've been using TDK DVD+R 1-16x Speed 4.7GB and I have another pack of Verbatim DVD+R 1-16x Speed 4.7GB which I haven't tried yet but the TDK brand has been treating me good.

I buy them by 100 packs at pretty good prices and just took a look at the prices of the DL's and it's about the same price for half but if the quality is much better than I may give it a try, thanks again!
