I really need your help. i just purchased a phillips dvp5960/37 dvd player and i hooked it up with the hdmi to dvi cable. when i turn it on i get the main screen with black lines from left to right going up the screen then when i put a dvd in to play as soon as the dvd starts it goes to a fuzzy snow screen but there is still audio. when i hook it up normally with the regular cables it works fine picture perfect. i wanted to use the hdmi to dvi so i could use the upconverting feature. i have messed with it now for hours and i have researched it on the internet for even more hours but i cant find nothing about it. my firmware is 37.06.42.33 and i have a samsung TXN3098WHF television. PLEASE HELP.

I'm not 100% on this but I was under the impression that you have to first hook it up with composite video (maybe even component) and go to the player's built-in menu and select HDMI output then the HDMI output should work.
I hope it is that simple for you but then again you said you did your research so perhaps it ain't that simple but worth double checking I guess.
The other thought is a bad HDMI/DVI converter cable.

Philips DVD players are pretty cheap and you should know that if you have a good HDTV like a Samsung, your TV will very likely do a better job of upconverting than a cheap DVD player. While this advice does not solve your problem, I would strongly advise you that if you get it working to do a comparison and see if the TV or the DVD player does a better job of upconverting rather than just assuming that you have to use the DVD player to upconvert.

i didnt try hooking it up with component first but i doubt that will work as in the settings it s already set to hdmi. i appreciate all your help.

the funny thing is the hdmi to dvi cable works just fine in my digital cable box.

All you should need to do is plug in the cable and choose HDMI output in the video setup menu. So you either have a bad cable, faulty player (HDMI output), or the player and your TV don't like each other (ie: the HDCP handshaking across the HDMI link isn't working properly).
I would start by returning/exchanging the player.Google is your Friend -
when i go to the settings its already on hdmi and there is no way to change it. i guess im gonna try exchanging the player. ill let you guys know what happens.
