why is my video quality so horrible?

I made an runescape music video I worked really hard on, and it looked great but not once it was uploaded..My other videos i edited with sony vegas pro and the quality was reduced but never this bad. (This video i edited with sony vegas platinum) I've searched everywhere i could and tried so many ways to improve it but its not getting better. After 4 days i don't know what else to try.. Also i noticed how the file size once it was rendered was much larger than the other videos i've made. I'd really appreciate some help.. Thanks

also some tips on how to get past youtube compresing it or re-encoding it (whatever its called) would be great. i did try total video converter to change it to a flv, the same type youtube changes them to but the quality didnt improve at all

With the little detail you have given, it is almost impossible to tell you why your video is so poor. It could be low quality source, wrong choice of codec, over compression, or all of the above.

If you video doesn't match youtube's exactly then it gets re-encoded and the quality drops dramatically. Your video is so far from what youtube wants you might as well be in Alaska hoping to get a tan while you surf.

Read the post I pointed you at (above) and see if it improves your lot.

High Quality is relative. Yes, youtube has higher quality than it used to have. That doesn't make it high quality, just better than complete crap.

I agree with you on that one. All these guys wonder when the picture, they used to watch on 2"x2" screen, does not look so "good" on 32" wide screen.

I know exactly what you mean tinker. I did use the flv converter at one point but just stopped using it all together because of the crap quality that came to it. I even think that the quality I downloaded and converted it too was sometimes worse than the one given on the website. I haven't heard much about getting better quality though.

What was the source video format? What was the project setting in Vegas Platinum? DV?
What format did you export from Vegas Platinum to Vegas Pro? or did you open the project on the same machine?
What was the project setting in Vegas Pro? DV?
Which filters were used?
How many layers were used?
What were your export encoder settings?

The first video i ever made was with vegas pro (trial)then it ran out and i downloaded it again on my dad's computer. those video's i never did anything to change the settings i just used every default there was and just rendered it as a .wmv; and the quality was alwasy reduced a bit but never this badly...this time i used vegas platinum becuase my other trials ran out and its much cheaper. The first one i used all default but the quality wasnt reduced like it usually is....it was so much worse

I dont know what a filter is...so yea..there were no filters used.

In vegas pro, there were always more than 4 layers, one of them was 9 think - in vegas platinum, the video having the problem only had 4 video layers and an audio

Wmv should be used only as an output format, not as an interemediate format.

What it sounds like is you started with a quality source (was this camcorder DV?), then you edited at default DV format settings, then you exported to wmv.

Next you imported the wmv to a default DV project setting which forced a wmv to DV format conversion. Then you edited in layers as DV format then exported again as wmv.

Then you converted wmv to MPeg2 during DVD authoring.

Each of these steps lowered video quality.

To do it right, shoot DV format, use DV format Vegas project setting and save (render as) master as DV format. To make a DVD render as DVD MPeg2 and then author. If you want wmv for some purpose, then this the time to render as wmv as well. Don't put wmv in the path to a DVD.
