i've been trying to convert some of my divx movies to ipod compatible format.

when i convert using the ipod or iphone presets i get a small file that is full length but is just white. i've change my encoder to mencoder and it will convert to a watchable file in quicktime, but says not valid movie for ipod when i try and move it to my ipod. the white file will move to my ipod. i can't believe i am the only person this is happening to!?

had same problem on both my mac book pro and mac pro

    thx

    daniel

Does your DivX AVI play in QuickTime Player?
Do you have the QuickTime DivX decoder component,
or similar 3rd party MPEG-4 ASP codec installed?

The iPod/iPhone presets default to decoding with QuickTime,
which means video decoding will fail if QuickTime can't play the source video.

You could try unchecking Decode with QuickTime (Options tab),
or you could expand QuickTime's decoding ability by adding a codec.

i have VLC installed. i have my AVI files set to play through that.

also mplayer will play the to be encoded divx files when i hit "play" in the upper right hand corner of ffmpegx.

the resulting encoded .mp4 will play in quicktime, just won't load on my ipod (nano - most recent)

i am also running the most recent ipod update and itunes update.

i am unchecking decode with quicktime and see if that helps.

    ok!
unchecking use quicktime seems to work..

before i had switched encoders to mencoder i guess that makes it not valid on ipod?

there are so many options i don't know exactly what they mean.

    thanks for your help.

True, mencoder invalidates the file, as it doesn't add the required metadata (aka "atoms").

The website documents all six tabs and some how-to guides. Good reading, if you want to know more.

Try adding the QuickTime codec as described before. The QT architecture just might help with the sync.
