    Hi everybody!
I have this anime video (720x576 25fps mpeg2) which is affected by this problem:

    Can I fix it?

    Thanks for help!

It would make more sense to show the example frame at the original resolution. If it is interlacing, it will get completely mangled by the resize and might look like this. In any case it will be difficult to help without an example video clip, rather than just one frame.

  3. It looks like improperly resized interalced video. You should deinterlace or inverse telecine before resizing.

I'm sorry but my Internet connection is too slow to let me upload video clips.

I think you are referring to the original video (before the resizing) which, unfortunately, I don't have. So, as I understand, there's no way to fix it, right?

    Here's a full size frame

Yes, if the field structure is already messed up by resizing you won't be able to fix it.

I'm not sure what's going on in that image but it doesn't look like interlace artifacting.

Here's another frame. The problem is not present in every frame, only in certain parts of the video (especially if there is a moving object).

Anyway thanks and Happy New Year to all of you!

That's almost certainly due to resizing an interlaced (or telecined with 3-2 pulldown) source without deinterlacing first.

It will only effect movement (i.e. where something changes between one field and the next), because if there is no change between two fields then there are no differences to corrupt.

I don't know of a fix. Whenever this problem crops up on the doom9 forums, the answer has always been that there's no fix. You'd think it would be possible implement something to improve it somewhat, but no one has yet!

    Cheers,
    David.

  8. With interlaced video each frame contains half of two separate pictures, called fields. One field is in all the even numbered scanlines, one is in all the odd numbered scanlines. If a frame is resized on the vertical axis parts of one field get "contaminated" with parts of the other field. Once this has happened it's no longer possible to separate the two fields for proper display.

Probably your best "fix", if available, is to get a retail DVD. If you've downloaded the video, you are at the mercy of the (in)experience of the person encoding it.

The way anime sells these days, I'm sure that what you have is available.

    I'm afraid no, it isn't.
