  1. I was wondering how I should have my speakers oriented i.e. how high and where they should be pointed. Also, how loud should the speakers be in comparison to each other? For example, should the rear speakers be quiet?

The links below should provide you with the information you need.

Also, you might need a sound level meter and a test disc to set the levels correctly.

    Good luck!

  3. Thanks. The only problem I might have is the surround speakers. I can't mount them on my walls so getting them 2ft.+ above where the audience sit will take some thinking.

That's why they make speaker stands.

Trial and error is the best way. I actually have my rear speakers behind two recliners. The sound actually seems to bounce upwards and works pretty well.

I have my front and center channel above the tv on top of my cabinet. The subwoofer is actually in the back rear of the room. I did have it next to the tv for a short while a few years ago. Problem was I had glass in the cabinet it was next to and would rattle it too much hence the move.

I wouldn't take any measurements too seriously. The important thing is to find a pleasing balance between your decorating sense (if you have one ) and your sound output. If you can hear it where it is than you can leave it there. Some setups are better than others but if you don't want to make unsightly modifications you can adapt to just about anything.

Of course anothre rule to live by if you can't set up your speakers to technical perfection:

    TURN THEM UP!!!!!!!!

    Enjoy...

Like Yoda my set-up isn't perfect either. My speakers are mounted too high, but they're pointed down. So it might take some trial and error, but I'm sure you'll find a happy compromise.

    Good Luck!

  7. Eh, I suppose that's true. The initial purpose for this thread was it seems like people never place their surround speakers correctly i.e. you can barely hear them. But, I wasn't sure if that was the way they should be. I have all 5 of my speakers turned to max power since they're all about the same distance apart but the surrounds are still a little quiet at least I think so.
