This is probably a dumb question, but is there a way to write a script for VirtualDub to do your encoding? I mean I crop out clips from TV shows and it's always the same null transform filter to crop out the edges, the same resize, the same compression, and the same bit rate. Is there any way to automate this tedious task with VirtualDub or any other program? Thanks!

Use avisynth instead. It is designed to do exactly what you are asking, and a lot more. You can even use many virtualdub filters in avisynth.

"Save process settings" on the vdub files menu should do that. This also saves the used plugin filters.
Or do you mean some kind of job processing? Vdub has also a job control on the files menu.
