  1. I have been off the pc and movies things for years now and trying to get back in to it a bit.. I have a simple question that I would like to ask.. I used to rip with smart ripper and dvd2one and tmpgenc... now days everything I find out there is in .avi format and I would like to know if there is a good simple program to encode .avi's to mpeg either 1 or 2 so that I can burn them to a vcd that will play in my stand alone player/ or is there a codec that will allow tmpgenc to read avi's?.. I tried burning avi's and they won't play.
Any help would be greatly appreciated..

thanks and forgive my stupid question, but the only question that is really stupid is the one not asked.

    TMPGenc still encodes .AVI files.

  3. Thank you for the reply.. I am doing something wrong then.. as my tmpgenc will not load .avi files... it says unsupported file type.. Is there something new that I might need? .. I have my ac3 for my sound, and I used G spot to check everything .. it shows that I have all codecs needed .. I am at a loss here .. is there a .dat file or anything for tmpgenc that I might be missing?

Sure, try ConvertXToDVD. It handles most AVI type formats off the web. Very simple and does a decent job of converting to DVD format. I would also recommend using ImgBurn for burning. VCD is a bit out of date presently, but you could try VCDImagerGUI or VCDEasy. I would only use VCD or SVCD if you don't have a DVD burner.

You can also use Gspot 2.70 to identify the AVI or MPEG filetype and show other information.

With TMPGEnc, you need to have the codec for your AVI type installed. And you may have to raise the VFAPI priority for TMPGEnc to recognize the file. See here: http://www.digitalfaq.com/dvdguides/convert/tmpgenc/tmpgenc.htm Look down the page a little for 'Problem opening source files'.

  6. I used to be able to encode with tmpgenc, but for some reason the exact same .avi files don't work anymore, anyone have any suggestions?

  7. I found that a codec was corrupt or damaged somehow and reloaded them.. once I got that fixed I am able to do .avi's again in TMPGenc ..
Hope that helps as it is the best suggestion I can give you .

You need the proper codec. Analyze the file in GSPOT, see what codec is needed.
