hi everyone, I have a movie i downloaded in AVI format. At the beginning of the encoding in TMPGEnc i stopped it because i seen kind of the words are not in english. Is that the subtitles and how can i convert it to english? Does it have to be done before or after the encoding to DVD MPEG-2 format? Is there guides for converting a language subtitle to english?

Translation can be automated somewhat through the likes of bablefish, but direct translation usually misses the subtly of language often gives unintentionally humorous results.

If you don't know the language it is in well enough to translate it to another language then you are pretty much out of luck. If you want to try babelfish then go here : http://babelfish.altavista.digital.com/babelfish/tr
If you have compatible subs, open them in Suntitle Workshop, copy each line, one at a time, into Babelfish, translate it, and use the translation to replace the original line.Read my blog here.

You can't get them out, you can't change them. All you can really do is cut them off and try to find English subtitles instead.

If you can find a matching subtitle you can then format it so that it covers the existing ones -- I had a Japanese movie with Chinese subtitles burnt in and did that with English.
For instance, instead of the usual transparent background, use a dark shade or even black to cover the old subtitles.
For a DVD video, use Subtitle Creator to format.
I find Subtitle Workshop easiest to edit and adjust timing of text subtitles.
