  1. If I am backing up a DVD that is larger than 4.7G, I understand that CloneDVD compresses the video. Does it do the same to the audio or is that copied 100%?

    I dont think that CloneDVD compresses the video. I think it uses a different methode to reduce the filesize namely by removing some material from the video and leaving the audio untouched.

    Transcoders (CloneDVD, DVD Shrink etc) only work on video. They look at the original encoding and remove data. It is the reason they are so fast, but also why the quality falls away fairly quickly in many cases as well. Audio makes up such a relatively small % of the total volume that there is little to be gain by reducing it's size, but you will lose quality.
