I'm posting in this forum because the problem I'm now having happens when the DVD burn starts. I'm hoping that someone can help me source the problem.

The DVD movies I want to play in my SUV's DVD/Video system, I copy now - after ruining several original DVDs due to scratches, dust, dirt, extreme heat (warpage) and rough handling. I now only carry and play copies of MY DVDs in my SUV - never the originals (again). I just wanted to state for the record that I am not pirating movies - just making copies of movies I've purchased exclusively for my use.

I am experienced in making successful copies of DVDs, however, recently I started to get burn failures and I haven't been able to figure out why. I haven't changed anything in my copy set-up - I use the same software, hardware and media. Now, when I get through the ripping and shrink processes and when Nero 7 (with the latest updates) starts the burn, I get a burn failure message. It appears that the burn starts and then fails after a few seconds.

I've reinstalled almost all software (several times) - including my OS (WinXP Pro SP2), and I still end up with the same failure to burn error message. I've tried everything I know to do (without success), so I'm posting here hoping that someone can help me find the problem. I'll list my hardware, software and media in the next paragraph. I'm wondering if I've finally worn out my DVD writer (it is several years old and has seen a lot of use) or if the problem is software related. I'll post the Nero 7 log after I list my software, hardware and media.

I build my own computers and have for years. I know my way around hardware and just know enough about software to install and update it. I do regular maintenance to keep my computers running smoothly (usually, anyway). The computer I'm using has been running well for the past two years. Hardware: Intel P4 3.4 MHz, Asus P4C800-E Dlx, 2 x 1GB OCZ RAM, 74GB WD Raptor HDD, Pioneer DVR-108 with after market firmware. Software (all with latest updates): OS = WinXP Pro SP2, Nero 7 Enhanced, DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0, DVD Shrink 3.2. Verbatim 8x and 16x DVD-R media - both burned at 8x speed. I've burned at 12x with the 8x media and 16x with the 16x media before, but my usual burn speed is kept at 8x 99% of the time. I have plenty of free hard drive space and available memory.

As I mentioned above, all goes well until the actual burn starts. A few seconds into the burn I get the burn failure error message. I have verified that the DVD media had a small, partial burn. Below is a copy of the log from Nero 7 that I'm hoping holds the key to the problem and that someone can decipher and help me with. If the problem can't be identified from what I have posted, then I will have to reformat the drive and start all over which I really, really, really, REALLY don't want to have to do - unless all else fails. Here goes:

    Hey Mats.

I could give that a try since I have the program and have used it before, but I'd like to get this problem figured out and solved - if possible.

I can use one of our other computers to burn the DVDs we want to put in our vehicle right now. As a matter of fact I'm doing just that right now with my wife's laptop and an external USB DVD Burner I have, since we want to take a few movies with us on an upcoming trip.

My current main desktop computer was burning fine before, and I need to get it working again. Using the wife's laptop to burn these few DVDs for our trip is fine, however, this would not be an agreeable solution for very long I'm sure.

Don't unnecessarily fight with Nero software unless you really have to. How and why it fails I'm sure even Ahead don't know, since if they did, they wouldn't have to release "updates" every week.

  4. Have you tried using the external burner that currently is on the laptop on your desktop unit to see if it works? If it works, then your problem is in your burner itself. The Pioneer DVR108 isn't the newest of burners and they can go bad. I've had 3 or 4 burners go bad over the years.

The "Power calibration error" would lead to believe the problem is with the drive, maybe a burnt-out laser, maybe a dirty laser lens. Don't know, wouldn't hurt to start with cleaning it. Try changing your ASPI layer with ForceASPI. The more troubling thing is this DRM entry, apparently you haven't made an image of that disc, but already made one copy of it. Is there a limit to the number of copies?

Good to see a few people catch those serials out in their logs before posting .

Considering you have an external usb burner for the laptop , that would be a place to start with a test .

Connect it to the desktop , and see if the same issue reappears .

If error dose reappear , then .

A: Disable autorun for optical drive .
B: Disconnect second hard drive .
C: Replace ide cable for optical unit with a "new" cable .

Rerun burn test once more .

Should error persist , and log indicates "Power calibration error " , then the choices are :

A: psu should be upgraded , or
    B: unit returned as defective

In consideration of the fact that the system os has been completely reinstalled , and the error remains .

In almost all cases , power calibration error fault can be tracked down to a poorly manufactured psu , or the fact that the end user will use the same ide cable , that the old unit was previously using .

Always use a brand new cable .

Hello everyone. I just got back from my trip and have just now read your suggestions (which I appreciate).

1st - I will try and burn a disk using my USB external burner. If that fails,
2nd - I will try the ASPI upgrade/change. If that fails,
3rd - I will install a known good Pioneer DVR-109 AND a new IDE cable, if that fails,
4th - I will replace my power supply with a known good one. If that fails,
5th - I'll take my .45 and administer the coup de grâce to this computer and finally finish building my dual core computer I started building 2 months ago.

Thanks again for all of the suggestions. I'll try the above and post back with the results.

Randolphjo2 - You might want to take a look at:
    http://www.digital-digest.com/~blutach/pgcedit_guide/burning_with_pgcedit/burning_with...pgcedit_v2.htm
and scroll to the bottom for a discussion on why burning DVDs with Nero is a bad idea unless you don't care if your discs can't be played in the future. In your case, you honestly may not care since you have the originals, but you can make your own mind up after reading it as to whether you think burning with Nero is still something you want to do or not.

Given the fact that no one has determined the longevity of burned media, the fact that Nero and DVDShrink create a single point of failure is interesting but may or may not be significant.

Certainly if your video is of critical importance to you it may matter, but multiple backups will probably be more prudent, and desirable in any case,

OK, the results of my testing are in and thanks to the suggestions posted here, the problem has been found and resolved.

1st Test: I tried burning a disk using my external USB burner. The disk burned without any problems, so that led me to the next logical step.

2nd Test: Replace the installed DVD Burner with a known good one. I swapped out the Pioneer DVR-108 with a Pioneer DVR-109 that has seen little use. I kept the original cable and didn’t change or update any software. I changed nothing but the drive itself. The result? Perfect burn and problem solved. Many thanks to ybeard, nic2k4 and Bjs - for pointing me in the right direction!

I've never had a DVD Burner fail before and didn't know what the symptoms would be (but now I do). I'm almost finished building my new Dual Core computer and I plan to continue to use this computer as a back up or possibly alter it to make a Home Theater computer. My Dual Core PC has two newer DVR's (a Pioneer DVR-111 and a Samsung Light Scribe DVR Writer SH-S162L), so I should be set in the DVR department with my new PC.

    Regarding other matters posted here:

jman98, thanks for the link to the PgcEdit article. It raised some interesting points that I'll mull over. I'm not particularly a devout Nero fan. I've been using Nero for many years and like many, I'm usually reluctant to change what has worked for me in the past. Until I read the article you posted a link to, I didn't realize that Nero had this problem and that PgcEdit might be a better solution. I've tried PgcEdit before (it's still installed on my computer) and I think I'll give it another try.

I don't recode my DVD's with Nero, I just use the Nero Burning ROM. I do use DVD Shrink to shrink and/or re-author my DVD's to fit on a single layer DVD. Like oldandintheway posted, I make multiple back ups of important or critical video or data DVD's.

mats.hogberg, are you saying that you aren't a fan of Ahead or Nero? That wasn't quite clear from your posts. ~

Thanks again everyone for your input, help and assistance. This has certainly been very educational. Posters like all of you (even Mats) are what make a site not just good, but great!!!

I'm not a fan of commercial software that is unreliable, is all. Ahead/Nero definately qualities in this department. There's absolutely nothing any part of Nero does, that freeware doesn't do better. Many seem to think they somehow must use Nero, and spend lots of time trying to make it do what it claims to do, when simply uninstalling it, and installing a few freeware apps would solve the issue in no time at all.
