I wouldn't use Nero for DVD burning, especially DL, as it seems to have a bad record there.
You could use ImgBurn or even DVD Decrypter. I would also recommend Verbatim discs as they seem to work better for most of us.
But from that log, it appears you may have had a communication problem with your burner, if I read that correctly. Maybe something else was running on the computer that interrupted the data. The problem appears to be before the layer break.
And if you are burning a 1:1 DL DVD, you shouldn't need Shrink for anything, unless you are using it to remove 'extras'.. -
An external HP unit , yikes ...
Check "autorun" feature is disabled for unit .
Reg tweak : http://www.pctools.com/guides/registry/detail/6/
You may need to check power management , and disable it as "never" , disable screensavers , and place antivirus software on hold , just incase it kicked in during the burning of the disc .
When it comes to external units , its best to remove other usb devices to prevent similar symptoms associated with devices set to "wake" function , so check bios for associated items which may cause usb interruptions .
Xp's auto defrag , info to disable : http://www.pctools.com/guides/registry/detail/1309/

----
Layer 0 completed , but layer 1 failed due to cycling issue in prep for layer 1 burn which caused "unit" not to be seen as available to complete process .
What done it , who knows , but try using imgburn as it has the option to set layer break in a more appropiate position , which may have been the issue .
I'm a bit concerned as to that "reset" issue .
Dose your external burner use its own power supply ? ... it had better .
