I've been doing it for quite a while and everything was fine. Then I got a new comp with Vista and I was getting error that said "Decoder broken" So I installed a new codec pack and that went away. Now tho when I start a AVI to DVD conversion the program will just stop working all together and shuts down..does this sound familiar to anybody?

    Problem One : WinAVI
    Problem Two : Codec Pack

WinAVI is unreliable and poor quality at the best of times. I wouldn't trust it as far as I could comfortably spit out a rat.

Codec Packs are a sure way to ruin video playback and encoding on any system

Add to this mix Vista, on which many codecs are not yet properly supported, and I suspect WinAVI is not properly supported, and you have a mess.

Uninstall both WinAVI and all the codecs you can. Use G-spot (which does work under Vista) to determine which codecs you need, and install only those codecs, as you need them.

Finally, use ConvertXtoDVD for your conversions as it is a lot more reliable and much better quality than WinAVI.

    And how far is that?
I only ask because it might be too far :P
I'm sure many a hardened Aussie could spit a rat much farther than ever care to imagine.

True credit for that phrase actually goes to an Englishman. It comes from the late, great, Douglas Adams.

That said, it's not something I put to the test too often.

Maybe ConvertXtoDVD is great, another good possibility (despite the name) is DVD2SVCD. It's a GUI + some routines, but mainly uses Avisynth, BeSweet, HCEnc, MuxMan...
