http://www.ffmpegx.com/download.html and search for realvideo (rmvb = realvideo)
-
The reallib is an optional install, that is needed for mplayer/ffmpegX to decode rmvb files.
Do you have that installed?
-
The link should download reallib.zip, which should unzip to a folder called "reallib" full of .bundle files and stuff.
Copy the whole folder (not just its content) to /Library/Application Support/ffmpegX , as per directions on download.html (near the bottom of that page).
Restart ffmpegX. Drop a rmvb file onto ffmpegX. It should now recognise it as a Real file. Try the Play button.
For conversion, pick a preset that uses mplayer. E.g. DVD mpeg2enc, with Decode with mplayer selected.

the reallib seems broken. it does NOT work at all with ffmpegx.
if anyone has any other tools or ideas for transcoding rmvb to any non-sucky video format, I'm all ears. pm, or email me. thanks!

Ok the problem lied with the codecs being PPC and not Intel (I'm on an intel mac).
I found a link on MPlayers site for both PPC and Intel Real Codecs.
First of all. You need to create a folder called "reallib" in Library -> Application Support -> ffmpegX (the Library folder needs to be in your root hard drive and not your home's Library path)
Then head to:
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html#binary_codecs
And download the following Binary "Mac OS X x86 20060611"
Download it, expand it.
Right click on the file "Essential Codecs Package (Intel).pkg"
then choose 'Show Package Contents'.
A new window with the folder 'Contents' will appear.
Open it, then double click on the file "Archive.pax.gz"
The file will expand into a folder called "Archive".
Open the "Archive" folder.
Select All, Copy the files or simply move them to
/Library ---> Application Support ---> ffmpegX --> reallib
Relaunch ffmpegX, feed it a .rmvb file, and watch it do its work.!
Thanks goes to the poster of this article.

mkulta, I have found the same prob as well - only the mencoder AVI Divx appears to do anything. The conversion takes an extremely long time, the Preview does not work, and the resultant file has no audio.
If anyone has any thoughts on solutions, I would greatly appreciate it. Here are my settings:
Source Format: Video: RV40, 640x352, 23 fps Audio: ffcook, 44.1KHz, 64 kbps
Taget Format: Video: mencoder h64, 640x352, 607 kbps, 23 fps, no crop. Audio: aac, 44.1KHz, 64kbps
