    Hi all

I would like to convert from a DV file
    http://www.users.on.net/~mark/169.jpg (30k)
to a 4:3 file with black bars.
    http://www.users.on.net/~mark/43.jpg (7k)

Can I do this in one step with ffmpegx or another app?

    Thanks

    Yes you can with ffmpegX:
Drop your file for input. Set an output filename (foo.mp4) and location. Pick a h.264 preset. In the Video tab, select the H264 [.MP4] (ffmpeg) codec to allow custom letterboxing. Set the target video width to 320. Set Autosize to 4:3; this will fill in the height (240). Use the Best button in the bitrate calculator to get an appropriate bitrate. Now change the video height to 176 pixels to get the wanted aspect ratio. In the Filters tab, select Deinterlace, as your likely converting from interlaced to non-interlaced. Set letterbox to [32,32,0,0] to get the black bars on top and bottom. In the Options tab, Encoding profile can be 'No profile' or 'PSP'. Encode.
