Two things I see in the log:

    Free physical memory: 83MB (85504kB)

    Status: 0x04 (0x01, SCSI_ERR)
    HA-Status 0x00 (0x00, OK)
    TA-Status 0x02 (0x01, SCSI_TASTATUS_CHKCOND)
    Sense Key: 0x05 (KEY_ILLEGAL_REQUEST)

The first, if it's correct may be the root of the problem. The second one is a SCSI error. (SCSI is just the OS's way of identifying a drive. It calls all drives SCSI) The CHKCOND and KEY_ILLEGAL_REQUEST is a data transfer failure. May be related to low memory.

Our friends at Digital Digest have a excellent guide for Nero errors. Well worth bookmarking for Nero users: http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=45942

I have a question, though. Does your writer work slower than normal? I would check your PIO/DMA settings as that can also cause similar problems:

To check DMA/PIO mode within Windows:

    Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager>IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.

From there, right click on one of the channels and choose 'Properties>Advanced Settings'. All drives should be DMA mode. The 'Current Transfer Mode' for Hard drives is usually DMA 4-6 and DVD burners DMA 2-4, DVD ROMs usually DMA 2. If you see any in PIO mode, that can slow things down.

Changing them back may be easy or complicated. First see if you can change them in that window. If not, I usually uninstall the channel the drive is on and let the OS reinstall it. This will usually take a reboot. This will not damage any files on the computer.

From there, if no luck, get back to us.

    drewbug,

Unless the rw disk you were using is 1x, you should follow redwudz's directions on resetting the drive to dma. The failure occurred 40 minutes into the burn, which is far too long for anything but a 1x burn.

The strange part of the log is (after the 40 minutes) the drive thinks the media changed. Did you press the eject button on the drive before the burn was finished? I'm not sure how else the drive would have reported that particular error.

I see this was your first post here, so welcome to VideoHelp.

Thanks for the advice red and Vegas. I went over just about everything I researched on the internet. I PIO/DMA are both set at DMA. I tried burning with different software, different media but the disc change error is also throwing me for a loop. I did not eject the disc. Matter of fact I thought also it may have been bumped but I have wasted many disc trying to burn. I sucessfully burned picture video but for some reason I can not burn dvd movies. Question-- Do you think because I have USB 1 instead of USB 2 port, this is causing my error? I have a laptop and it only has USB 1 ports but the DVD Writer is USB 2. I'll attach another log. Thanks for all your help. Maybe I'll try it on another computer.

The data rates between USB 1.1 and 2.0 are a major difference. The external may not like the media - my plextor will puke on either Sony or Memorex. Try something like Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, or any high quality media. I did actually run across some Playos at Staples 60 pk for $6 after rebates that have an MCC (Verbatim) media code.

My best advise is the same that I give to anyone that I help - or build an external for: Start out at 2X, then play the DVD. The next one you will burn at 4X. I ALWAYs tell people to burn 16X media at 8X or less, and I stand by that now - I can't recall ever using a disc that I did a test burn at 16X. I really don't like watching 90% of a DVD six months after a burn - and I absolutely hate having to recover data from a disc - waste of time, when you likely wouldnt have to if you used good media and good sense.

You may also try swapping out the USB cable - some are bad.

As it's an external, I might would also try a burn with another machine.

You may try downloading DVDRebuilder or DVDShrink, DVD Decrypter and or Ripit4me, and creating an .iso image of the disc and burning with DVD Decrypter. If it burns (at 2X at first), then the problem is NERO. If it fails, you may have to find a way to get USB 2.0 onto your computer. I have used PCMCIA devices for both USB and Firewire, and know they'll work.

Also: Your memory is listed at 492MB. This looks like you have shared memory with video (i.e. Compaq, HP), and more memory would likely help. If your USB ports are only 1.1 (which is my guess, as you're running an Athlon XP (+18GB hard drive - signs of an older machine), I'd look into the PCMCIA card - $30 or so if you search the internet (BestBuy will plug you for double that), and you're off to burning at impressively improved speeds. If your drive supports firewire or you're looking into getting a DV cam - get the combo version.

I think classfour has the right idea. Trying to burn over a USB 1.1 connection can be a problem. I have a USB 2.0 PCMCIA card for my laptop and it works well. I also have a combo FireWire/USB 2.0 card that I bought at a later point. The combo card is a little more cost, but it gives me a lot more options.

The burning software and the burner may just be 'giving up' at some point because the data is coming so slow. And the type of media can always be an issue, trying a different brand may help. But I would try to upgrade to USB 2.0.

And if you have any thing else attached to the USB port, unplug it before trying to burn. USB is used for mouse, keyboards and other devices at times and the OS may be 'talking' to them and interrupting the data stream to your burner. USB is not really that great for streaming data. I prefer FireWire for that as it has less overhead and is more suited to large data streams like a DVD burner needs.

Thanks Classfour and Redwudz. My dvd burner is only equipped with a usb in the back, no place to plug in a firewire. I will probably try on another computer and/or try upgrading to the USB 2.0. I have tried DVD SHrink and Decrypter. Thanks again. Its people like you that keeps me sane
