anybody have any experience with this TV

    http://shop4.outpost.com/product/5101336;jsessionid=IW1piFV+ITp8iYnP2rG-mw**.node2?sit...H:MAIN_RSLT_PG

I will have to buy an HD tuner separate, at a later date, my primary interest will be in playing back DVDs since i usually buy the wide screen version, BUT only have a standard TV at the moment

the specs seem pretty impressive for the price

I suggest you look at one in the store before you buy. The specs look good but the one I saw at Fry's looked soft next to a similar size Panasonic LCD ($899).

The source was their distributed off air feed. It might look better with a progressive DVD source. This model isn't that good with interlace SD sources.

thanks ed, i'm going to 'look around' the store and compare them, this gives me something to watch for,

most TV's have controls for contrast , sharpness etc...

have you ever been in a store where the big ticket items where set to their best ,and the less expensive models where set at soft settings, to make them less attractive

OR even vise-versa to push the model they wanted to clear out

do they even have the remotes out so , we can play with the settings

They know all the tricks but I have to say this model didn't match the double price Panasonic sitting next to it for 480i/1080i source. I think I was seeing 480i upscaled to 1080i at the time. It might be fine for progressive DVD. Try to find a retailer that will let you play your test DVD.

went to 'office depot' today to see the 32" olivea ALL sold out.

but they had this 32" ( 31.5 screen visible ) Vewsonic HDTV ASTC tuner sitting there $549 after rebates ( i hate dealing with rebates ) this thing has beautiful color, even though the specs say the contrast ratio is 800:1, the olevia is spec at 1600:1, my current SD LCD tv is 500:1 but it's several years old , all the TVs where displaying the same DVD , not a remote or instruction book in sight

their computer said another store has 3 32" oliveas in stock, i called the store, they said they have ZERO the computer is WRONG

guess i'm going store hopping tomorrow

    when looking around

fry's has a large selection, but surpise the 27inch HD ready Olevia had NO video signal going to it,, OR it wouldn't detect it,

found an office depot with the olevia 32" HDTV with the tuner thay had it plugged into the composite video signal from a small portable player

everytime there was fast movement the picture was full of jaggies on the edges of the moving objects, i'm guessing it was feeding a de-interlaced signal, if not then the olevia is junk

a couple more stops and back to the nearest office depot to look again at the viewsonic, it looks great, everything on display was showing the ame video feed the 'Incredibles' and the price has changed on the Viewsonic, its $549, after 50 instant rebate NO mailing IN..

but i measured it and it's almost 3 inches too tall, it just won't fit because of the bottom mount speakers

they had a 26 inch magnavox, but it just didn't have the same color and the black wasn't as deep, but it will fit my entertainment shelve,

i'm on the look out for a sale of a 26/27 inch Viewsonic with the ASTC tuner

if that 32 had fit my shelf, I'd be a proud owner right now

FWIW, I didn't like the olevia menu system at all

the Magnavox had the best menu system

but the Viewsonic menus were reasonable, just NOT as detailed and easy as the magnavox

but I buy for the picture NOT the menu system, Unless the thing is just to big a pita ( olevia )

  8. I have a 32" Monitor only version. 332H. Saw that they could be using LG panels. Like most of the reviews on their stuff. Really like it!

Feeding it with a Samsung DTB-H260F HD Tuner, A Pioneer 220 and a Nintendo Wii.

Most reviewer state they adjust some of the setting when they get it.

Odd. The Frys where they had a 27 set up was not being feed anything. The CompUsless where I got mind at least was feeding via a Component...

When you give it a decent data signal like Cars it really shines!

    nightwing

thats nice too know, a guy i know who runs a AV electronics repair shop , said the olevias were good TV's, i ask him saturday..

BUT when you go shopping you can only judge by what you see

of course with HDTV beauty really is in the eye of the beholder, we can read all the specs and reviews, then we buy the most eye pleasing for the money we have, astehics really are a perception of mind & eye

Consumer Reports had Viewsonic dead last for picture quality, apparently there is a reason they are so cheap. The Olevia and Vizio were pretty good for the low priced models.

funny Vewsonic, would be rate low, they have always been one of the best monitors around, and the TV with Tuner i was looking at , had the best picture in Office depot, and one of the best over at frys, where it had to compete with bigger TVs and plasma

the reds were red ( not red orange ) and the blacks were black the contrast was better than the TV with higher specs setting next to it

I'm begining to think that 'for many mfg' contrast ratio is a statement of how many shades of grey the display has NOT the depth of difference between black and white in

when a contrast ratio of 1000:1 has blacker blacks than a TV with 1600:1 or more and a brighter white and redder red

there is something wrong with the listed specs

    what was consumer reports dislikes/problems

do you have a link ?

Same reason I garbed the 32". Great picture!

When you pump a disk like Cars into it on a good machine it really shows how good it is.

Also feed a first gen mac mini into it also does well.

Different manufacturers measure contrast ratio in different manners. Generally whatever will give a particular monitor the highest rating. This usually includes showing a completely white image with the brightness up all the way (far beyond what you could normally use, a setting that would totally wash out the picture, to the point of damaging the monitor even) and calling the the brightest. Then they show a completely black image with the brightness turned as low as it will go (another completely unusable state), and call the all that the darkest. The contrast ratio is then the ratio of those two numbers.

If you want real contrast ratio numbers you need to find independent reports that use standardized and reasonable methods. Like using an ANSI standard black and white checkerboard pattern. Measuring this way gives much smaller ratios.
