I've got some TV episode AVI files, originally from the 1970s. They look a bit out of focus and slightly fuzzy.

What Avisynth filters might I try to improve this?

I could just try all the filters with the word "sharpen" in them I'm hoping to take advantage of others' experience.

I did try MSU Sharpen, but it didn't seem to improve things much at low settings and at higher ones was pretty ugly.

  3. I'd leave it as is. Any sharpening is going to accentuate artifacts from the poor conversion the video has already been through.

But if you must, try a few light sharpen() filters in a row (something like an unsharpen mask).

Another thing you should do is enable deblocking in the MPEG4 decoder. Or use the DeBlock() filter in AVISynth. That will smooth out the macroblocks so they don't get accentuated by sharpening.
