Are "m2v"s lossy?

Hi all,
I used SmartRipper to extract the video from a VOB. Are .m2vs compressed at all?

M2v is the file extension typically used for a video only stream encoded in mpeg2 format. Mpeg2 is indeed a lossy compression scheme, but that is how the video is actually stored in the vob file on the disc. You are not losing further quality by extracting using SmartRipper, if that was what you were worried about.

Would another way of saying it be that a VOB is a "container" similar to MPG but capable of much more (such as chapter points, etc.) and the M2V file is simply the video stream inside of the VOB? Just like an AC3 file or MP2 file would be the audio stream.

I don't mean to confuse things. Just hoping to unravel any misunderstanding I may have as well.
