I'm trying to find the right tool for a very specific task. I downloaded ULead 10 trial, and while it's taught me a lot, I just don't think it's right for the job.
I have a hilarious old VHS tape that someone overdubbed. The video is awful, even after the DVD conversion, because it was played hundreds of times over the years.
The audio is in good shape.
So I found the original cartoon in pristine digital form. I want to replace the old audio and match it up with the new video.
I thought this would be easy, but it turns out the creators of the overdubbed tape had cut out five and ten second parts of the original cartoon. I didn't realize it until I played them next to each other.
If the audio doesn't match the mouth movements it looks really bad.
If I could line both films up, frame by frame, at the same time, and cut the extra parts out of the original video, this would work.
Is there a program that does this? I have a PC, but I am on a mission to make this happen. I'll find a way to get whatever equipment I need.

I'll check it out.
Can I look at two video tracks at the same time? If I match the two video tracks, the audio will work. The audio matches the old video perfectly.
It's been hard to see exactly where the original starts and stops were made, there are a lot of them. -
OK, I'm working with Vegas. I've got the original VHS-DVD converted to MPG. This is good.
I'm having trouble with the other "compilation" cartoon CDs, though. Each CD has 5 cartoons. I only need one from each CD. Two problems:
1) I don't understand why DVDs are organized the way they are at a file level. There are a bunch of .VOB files, which don't contain an entire cartoon. This makes no sense to me. Why can't they just make it like VHS??? Start here, record this, stop here, poof, you're done.
2) I can import the whole CDs, and turn them into MPGs like I did to the other. This will be a huge waste of disk space, but I can do it. In Vegas I haven't figured out how to:
-Cut out a clip from an MPG and save it as another MPG
- Replace video from one MPG and keep the same audio.
This has been really frustrating. I feel retarded. Please help. -
VOB files have an upper size limit of 1000MB, so where they break off, they break off. On playback it is seamless. You can use tools like DVD Shrink to isolate just a section of footage from a DVD, write this out to your HDD, then use VOB2MPG to convert it to mpg.
In Vegas, cutting can be done as simply as putting your cursor where you want to cut, and hitting the s key (s for split).
To save footage as mpeg, choose File->Render As from the menu, then select Mainconcept Mpeg2 from the list next to Save as File Type.Read my blog here.

You can use DVDDecrypter in IFO mode to extract each cartoon as a single VOB file.
