hi,
is there a way to improve the quality of a dvd after conversion from a dvd-9 to dvd-5??... here's what i did :
- "DVD Shrink" to backup to HD using dvd-5 option
- "ImgBurn" to copy the dvd
the quality of the backup is not as good as the original... i can see "squarish pixel" when watched on tv...
while i understand such conversion will have some quality loss, is there anyway i can improve on this??... or is my way of doing it wrong??... how can i "clone" a copy of the original while at the same time making it region free??...
any advice is much appreciated...
thanks !!

Hello-
Yes, there are some things you can do to improve the quality.
You can remove anything you don't absolutely need, such as extra audio tracks, warnings and logos, and extras you don't want. VobBlanker is perhaps best suited for this. By doing this, the remaining parts of the DVD will be shrunk less.
You can use a real encoder, perhaps through an all-in-one app such as DVD-Rebuilder, rather than a transcoder like DVD Shrink. When doing a lot of compression, most think that an encoder does a better job.
Whichever method you use, the backup is never as good as the original, although if done right, you may not be able to tell the difference between the two.
It becomes region-free (or all-region) when decrypted to the hard drive. -
You will always lose quality when transcoding DVD-9 to DVD-5.In DVDShrink you should always have Deep Analysis enabled and use AEC.If the quality bar goes below 80% then choose Smooth in DVDShrink's AEC options,or for a lot lower than 80% choose the Extra Smooth option, but it will take a lot longer to transcode. This will help to improve the quality.Use DVDShrink to remove video that you dont need by replacing with a Still image and only choose the audio you need. This will save space and less transcoding will help.
I always use AnyDVD to decrypt and make "region free" my DVD's but there is a lot of other software that does this, take a look in the tools section.
I thought DVDShrink could make DVD's region free?~Luke~ -
hi manono & laspis59,
thanks for the reply...
manono : the dvd contains several episodes of shows with menu and i'm trying to "preserve" it as it is... i will take a look at "DVD-Rebuilder"...
laspis59 : yes, DVDShrink did make the dvd region free when backed up to HD... the original was region coded and i just want to make the copy region free... DVDShrink did the job ok just that the quality after conversion from dvd-9 to dvd-5 is poor... will try to look at the AEC options... thanks for the tip... -
If your planning on preserving the menu's,audio, video ect.. and dont want to remove anything from the original then manono's suggestion to use DVDRebuilder is probably best because if your concerned about quality,re-encoding is the way to go compared to transcoding but takes a lot longer than Shrink.CCE with rebuilder is a very good way to preserve quality and CCE is very fast.
Using the AEC with DVDShrink will most definitely improve quality especially using the extra smooth setting, but still, you will get better results re-encoding vs transcoding and if your not rushed for time then re-encoding will be suitable in your situation.~Luke~ -
hi laspis59,
thanks !...
will take your advice and give DVDRebuilder a go...
