first off... i am trying to extract a non-encrypted dvd onto my hard drive and edit it with adobe peremiere.
Ive been poking around on the forums and guides and Ive managed to extract my dvd to the hard drive and download virtual dub mod. When I try to convert the 2gb vob file into an AVI file, I end up with a 30gb AVI file. I am saving the AVI in Virtual Dub Mod as uncompressed.
What is the best way to reduce file size. I just can't hhave 500gb of video taking up 99% of my hard drive. What codec should I encode the video in? Help soembody give me pointers.
Thanks!

You could install the panasonic DV codec and save as DV avi - this would be around 13gb per hour of running time. Premiere will have no issues editing DV footage, and it does only minimal damage to the image, if any. A lossless codec, such as lagarith or huffyuv will take up about 50% of the space that uncompressed uses.
If you are using the latest version of Premiere Pro, then you should be able to edit mpeg2 natively. Earlier versions required the mainconcept mpeg editing plugin.
Your other choice is to use a dedicated mpeg editor such as womble VCR or videoredo, in which case you can avoid all this conversion.Read my blog here.
