I have just brought a small form pc MSI Mega 865 deluxe(2.8 Intel) +1G Ram + Geforce 5600 card.
I installed XP (just on sp1 at the mo), DX9, latest video drivers:

vlc - stalls (and colours are incorrect (very washed out)
mpc (with mkv codec pack (fddshow)) plays at like 20% speed then stops.

However on my 1.8(Intel) laptop (over wireless) running xp sp2 the file plays like 99% correct (odd juttering on fast scenes)
And my dual 3.2 (media center edition) obviouly works just fine.

Anyone got any ideas what is causing this?

Some more information about the MKV(s) in question might help, such as what codecs they're using for the audio and video. I think MediaInfo should be able to give some info, and maybe the "Stream and Media Info..." selection in VLC (Ctrl-I). I'm not sure about any other methods.

Have you tried installing the official Matroska support pack and telling MPC to use that, instead? Are you playing the MKV from the laptop's hard drive, a CD/DVD, or attempting to stream it across the wireless network?

(edited: stupid transposition mistake. Really. )

the laptop is streaming wirelessly across the network.. and works like 99% (a bit juddery, but it is a 1.8Ghz)
the 3.2 works flawlessly off streaming/HD
the 2.8 i put the file local.. and it still has the same issues..

    vlc - locks up
mpc (mkv codec) paying in the wrong colurs and very slow.

I have tried 2 different fgx cards and they both have the same problem.. so possibly not driver (gfx) releated.

    most odd.

Im going to try some more codecs tonigth and see what happens.. but any other ideas.

Installing more codecs when you don't really know what you need isn't really a good idea.

We need to know more information about the video file in question.
