I am 99.99% certain the disc is not encrypted. DVD Decrypter chokes after many retries reading a sector. DVDFab Decrypter chokes on the same file. When I try to copy the file in Windows Explorer it gives a CRC error.

How can I copy this file? I don't care if blank sectors are inserted where the rippers or Windows are choking on the file. The blank sectors may result in a few seconds of missing video but I would still like to be able to make the backup with Recode.

    Thanks,
    BGC

What makes you think that the DVD is NOT encrypted? Smartripper and DVDDecryptor show the current key when they are running, so this is an easy check. If the disc is pressed, then I would assume (with no additional info) that the disc WAS encrypted (with the exception of most porno discs - and least all of mine... I mean all of my neighbor's porno discs are not encrypted).

I have had pressed discs that had read errors that DVDDecryptor was able to recover, provided you gave it enough time. I'm not sure of the correct settings for this, but I believe that you set "REREADS" to "continuous". I had one disc that took 5 hours to get it to be read. But, it was successfully recovered.

BINGO! That's what it is. The decrypters do NOT report any encryption. It's just the low quality media used or maybe a scratch. I just want to know if you can copy the file while replacing the bad sectors with blanks so I can have the VOB for the next step?

    Thanks,

You can rip out all the good chapters, and skip the bad. Use SMARTRIPPER for this. Even without that one chapter, you'll probably have "plenty" of action!

Also, I have found that most of "my neighbor's" discs has LPCM audio encoding. If you converted this to .AC3, you probably will not have to recode the video.

    Thanks for the replies.

Seems like a waste to have to kill a whole chapter because of a few bad sectors. Anyone else care to chime in?

IIRC, DVDDecryptor has the option to skip bad sectors (though I have never had to use it).
