ok I'm trying to help a friend of mine out. He has several movies that were given to him that were zipped. Everytime he tries to unzip, it goes to 100%, then he gets CRC error on file r.86. He has defragmnented his pc. Checked for virus/malware, everything clean. It's weird. He has used, winzip, winrar nad now power archiever. Nothing works. It goes all the way to the end, 100%, then CRC error on file r86. Can anyone help please. Thanks.

it's a bad rar. unless you have par files to fix it or it has recovery record built in you are out of luck. try starting winrar, navigate to the folder with the bad rar(file/change drive/open folders) highlight the bad r86 and click repair in the upper right. treat as rar. if it finds recovery record it may be able to fix. otherwise it's time to get a new copy of r86 or delete them all.

Thanks for the update, BUT, he has been given these 3 movies 4 times, and 4 times the same problem, but in my pc they unzip with no errors. We are trying to figure out why on his PC and no other,

I fixed it. I used chkdsk /f and it fixed the problem. Thank you all for trying to help. Greatly appreciated.

the file when unzipped may be larger than you can write to a fat32 hard drive. he may need a new one anyway if there are recurring errors. get him a new drive and format it with the ntfs file system.

I used to use the 'fix' features in Info-Zip's Zip and PKZIPFIX (both command-line), to see if that might help. I don't know if PowerArchiver, WinRAR or others have it, though. (I'm currently using IZArc and 7-Zip; have to check if those have features like that.)

And yes, make sure you're using the latest version of each unarchiver. It hasn't happened to me with zips, but on rar and some other formats, I've seen errors if the unarchiver wasn't completely up-to-date.

Powerarchiever is updated. I told him to buy a new hard drive and reformat it to NTFS. My hard drive is formatted to NTFS, plus his drive might be dying. Thanks all for the responses.

Ok I'm back. We cannot get this system to unzip. I give up. Again as previously stated, all 5 movies I can unzip with no problem, but in my friends computer it goes all the way until 100% and the crc error comes up on file r86. I copied file to his c: drive (OS system) and tried there. No luck. He does not want to reform, even though I told him to. I have no more suggestions. Anyone, please.

Powerarchiever ... no way ... better use zipgenious .

A: You need the updated unrar.dll to unpack rar files .

B: NEVER , EVER , try to repair an ORIGINAL ... always create a backup copy before attempting repair ... or else .. opps ... too late then .

C: Two different pc's can have different results ... we would need the complete specs of both systems to troubleshoot issue , this is , os , service packs , patches , and every program installed on both systems for comparison .

Some programs can cause system issues , and affect other programs performance / function .

D: Possible recovery of original .

Drive rescue may be able to locate the original , just that you must specify the "saved too" format ... same format as hard drive used when file was initially stored on it ... incase drive went through conversion process from fat32 to ntfs .

Problems can also come from users who do not confirm the data backups regularly that have been stored on cd / dvd .

E: Your friend needs to get another hard drive soon , rather than later , and use the manufacturers tools to mirror the bad drive to the new drive ... as the chkdsk remains unresolved ... bad to leave in such state .

Thanks Bjs. I told him to change his HD. Now the question is which one. His main drive is 80GB and gis 2nd drive is 250GB. Since i copied the files to his nmain drive, still the same error. SO could it be both of them. Also how do you update unrar.dll ? Thanks for the help.

Found unrar.dll, thanks. I will try that first. Is Zipgenius better than powerarchiever?
