Hi all,
I have a dvd which has some scratches on and I am trying to back it up.
It is a non comercial private teaching video which I own and has no copyright protection. I have managed to copy all but one of the files to a HDD. the one I can't copy returns a CRC error message. can anyone suggest a way to get this file off of the dvd or suggest suitable s/ware to do it. If the file has errors on it. Would it be possible to edit the file with a hex editor to repair it (eg.if just one frame is damaged.)? It is a vob file one gigabyte in size.
My hex editor is Hexedit.
Thanks Invadar.

CRC errors usually come from scratches or finger prints, so the first step is usually to make sure the disc is clean and scratch free.
If you have small scratches there are a variety of methods to try, white toothpaste being one simple and cheap solution. Just rub a little - carefully - into the scratch with soft cloth. Be careful, as toothpaste is a mild abrasive, so run out form the middle, not around the disc.
You can also try ripping with ISOBuster (payware) or DVD Fab Decrypter (free) to see if they have more luck. Both are pretty persistent.
Sometimes using a different DVD Rom drive can make a difference, so see if you can try using a mate's PC.
Finally, you can tell programs like ISOBuster and DVD Fab Decrypter to ignore read errors. You might get some blocking during playback, depending on how much data is gone, but you should be able to salvage most of it.Read my blog here.

I have had very good results on a number of unreadable disks by using one of the DVD cleaning devices available at local stores.
Unless you only have one disk that will ever need cleaning, I recommend the battery-powered version, 2-300 cranks by hand gets old real fast.
And somebody just made a post asking what in the world would require so many folks to make backups of their DVD's. -
I would definitely try to clean/polish the disc before trying to read the damaged file with a recovery program. If you were able to read it with one, you would likely not recover all the file. But if you polish it, you may be able to read it all.
And welcome to our forums.
