There a quite a few ways. I would try FairUse Wizard if you want an easy way. It just needs a decrypted DVD file. You can do that with DVDFab Decrypter. AutoGK is another program that can do a DVD to AVI conversion.

Or you can use VOB2MPG to save out the whole DVD to one large MPEG file, then use VirtualDub Mod or similar to convert to AVI. When you say 'AVI', I'm assuming Divx or Xvid.

WinAVI isn't that great of a converter. There are better freeware tools out there.

    And welcome to our forums.

What about converting VOBs to DV AVI, specifically MainConcept type-2 DV codec which is already on the PC?
For the nth time, with the possible exception of certain Intel processors, I don't have/ever owned anything whose name starts with "i".

Most DVDs have 5.1 AC3, along with other audio formats. For most AVIs, you may want to use the 2 channel AC3 if it's available. I think FairUse may convert it all to 2 channel. One audio format that's new can use 5.1 AC3 for Divx/Xvid; Aud-X.

But your player would have to accept it. If it's only to be played back on a computer, you can use most any audio format you want.

Generally, if you can play it back on the computer, you can convert it without major audio problems. AC3 Filter should be able to play it. AC3 ACM Decompresser can load it into a program like VirtualDub (Mod).
