So what speed do you burn your dvdr's at?

I burn mine at 16x now that I finally upgraded to a Pioneer 111.

I use to only burn at 4x since that was the max on my old microadvantage burner (which I still have by the way).

    16x dvdr's for vid's @ 8x 99.9% of the time.
    PS2 BU's usually @ 2x-4x max.
DL @ 2x all the time.

I use the rated speed of the DVDs. Using TY 16X now. I figure if I have to burn at a lower speed, I'm using crap media or a poor burner.

At half the media-rated speed, usually. Just being conservative, and the burner (still a Pioneer 108) isn't getting any younger. Sometimes, if I'm in a hurry and the dvd is not going to be a long-term keeper anyway, I might burn it at the max speed.

At the rated media speed. Any slower is just wasted time and any faster is not advisable.

I usually buy the least expensive printable media then let my NEC 3550 or Optiarc 3570 use their default burn speed for the media.

As an example, I'm currently using DVD-R hub printable from Meritline sold under the "HQ" brand name. It is TY02 media rated for 8x and all my NEC / Optiarc drives burn it at 12x with zero coasters without flashing to any hacks.

The last batch I bought was $20.99 shipped per hundred which is a true bargin for TY02 media.

  14. What exactly is the difference between the dye in say a "1x" DVD-R and a "8x" DVD-R? Is the dye spread out more evenly to get better burns? Is it made with a slightly different chemical mixture? I know the faster you burn, the less time the laser in the drive has to burn each specific spot. So the dye has to react quicker to a shorter burn time. Does the drive change the output wattage of the laser to burn differently at different speeds? Anyone know of any technical documents that actually explain this process?

It would seem there is some speed tolerance in the dye. But I've also seen some RW discs packaging say "only for 2.4x and up drives". So apparently a burn speed of 1x-2x wouldn't burn properly with these discs.

I have a 16x Memorex, I gave up burning at 16X because of movies not working in standalones, now I use 8X and no problems.

i usually burn at the rated speed. However I had a bad batch of 16x TDKs that would only burn at either 12x or 8X. I gave up on these and now only use TYs - haven't had any problems with these 8X discs.

Hey, where's 6x? That's the speed I burn mine at, but there's an option for that or for other. I use 8x TY02 media.

    12x with my NEC 3500AG - after well over 500 burned DVD's, maybe 3 or 4 coasters.

From all that I've read and tested 16X burners are not as dependable burning 16X media yet. Most have claimed much better at 12X.
Just my observations. As I have a few 16X burners I hope this is soon fixed.
In the meantime I only buy 8X TY premium from a respected online store.

Some of my wirters write 8X TY fine at 12X but I trust 8X and only try the other speeds for testing.

The fact that some people are getting coasters at higher speeds leads me to remain at 4x just to be safe. Whats the rush, a few minutes here or there.
Besides, Lordsmurf explained it somewhere, that 8x is not double speed to 4x etc, but it only speeds up for the last section thereby only a few minutes difference. It made sense. Maybe you should explain it to them again Lordsmurf.

I found Vertban 8x gave me a lot of coaster, so I switched to 4x and they went fine.

The other week I got TDK 16x and have so far had 100% success rate at 16x.

Possibly some drives do things better than other drives at different speeds? I don't know.

Yes, Wile_E, tolerance of the dye is one factor in speed. Balance is the biggest one. There are some others too.

Sorry ROF, but there are some adviseable exceptions to the "burn at rating" rule. Firmware and media quality especially. It seems mikesbytes has already experienced that one firsthand.

For me, for DVD-R, it's mostly 12x on 16x discs, and rated speed on all others. I do still have some 4x burners, so the 8x-16x discs go 4x in those, and then DVD recorders do realtime recording (which is technically slower than 1x recording). Sometimes, depending on disc, faster or slower. YUDEN000T02 is fine at 12x. Prodisc 8x tends to work nicer at 4x or 6x.

For DL media, do the MKM001 at 4x.

    All CD-R is done 16x.

True when speak of firmware, but that should indicate that it's time to update your firmware or get a drive capable of recognizing your media at it's rated speed. If you have to burn media at lower than it's rated speed to achieve optimal results I call that bad media and will either return it or give it away as in most cases my burned data is important and anything less than optimal doesn't work for me.

My option is NOT on the list ... I burn 6x because that is the fastest I can burn before all the "ramping" ... up and down ... slow to fast to slow to faster to slow to even faster.

I hate that and cannot imagine how that gives a good burn ... especially since my buffer levels tend to go crazy.

    I burn 8x DVD-R at 4x and I burn 16x DVD-R at 6x and 6x is my MAX burn speed.
