Ok, I'm trying to work with some AVI files in VirtualDubMod to eventually convert to DVD. I try to convert the audio and I get this message...
Now, I know what you're all thinking. You're thinking "This is a pretty simple problem and even the error message is telling you what's wrong. You're trying to convert an audio file for which you don't have a codec for. Download the codec your problem will disappear." Well, I've run the file through AVICodec and it's not that simple, as we see here....
So, basically where this puts me is I need to work with the audio to this file, and VirtualDubMod is telling me I can't. I've figured out that it's not the codec that's at issue. Help?
(Hopefully I've done everything correctly. If not, please let me know how I can make any future question posts better. Thanks.)

You must be joking with those images ... I can't see anything.
They are freaking tiny.
What type of audio do you have in these AVI files?
It probably is either AC-3 or MP3 ... while at it why not just type what error msg you get from VirtualDubMod.
Again the graphics are utterly unreadable.

Bah... just my luck that the pics go wrong. The first picture is an error message in VirtualDubMod that says...
Error initializing audio stream decompression
The requested conversion is not possible
Check to make sure you have the required codec.
The second picture is part of the analysis from AVICodec which says that I have the audio and video codec supported on my machine (I've installed the LameMP3 codec twice just to be sure). -
I don't know why VirtualDubMod is having problems with the audio decoding if the audio is MP3 format and it seems you are saying that the the audio is MP3 so ... ???
What I can tell you is that the best way to demux MP3 from the AVI is to use GOLDWAVE. Now GOLDWAVE is trailware meaning you get to use it X number of times (full functionality) but after X number of times it locks up and you must purchase it. The good news is that you can use it many times over before it gets to the point that it locks up and requires you to purchase and even better yet the price is very reasonable.
So download and install GOLDWAVE and then just open the AVI into GOLDWAVE.
Now do a SAVE AS and you will have a 16-bit PCM audio file. At this point you have good working audio and you can do whatever you want with it ... such as convert it to AC-3 or MP2 for the DVD. You can even use the 16-bit PCM audio file for the DVD if you want as long as it is 48k sampling rate (and I think it has to be Stereo as well or at least 2 channels of audio which means Mono is OK). Due to the small file size though it is best ... after converting the MP3 to PCM ... that you convert it to AC-3 and for that the freeware program ffmpeggui is an excellent choice.
So that's your normal workflow for getting MP3 out of an AVI file.
However I still don't understand why VirtualDubMod is giving you that error message. That is still an issue you need to fix although I wouldn't be surprised if installing GOLDWAVE fixes it as GOLDWAVE includes a MP3 codec as I recall.
Last but not least ... whenever you install any software or codec ... be sure to reboot the computer so it can take affect.

P.S.
The pictures you posted in your original post do show up but are VERY tiny ... so tiny as to be unreadable. All I am saying is to not make them so small in the future. I mean you got the hard part correct ... most people have trouble posting the images at all when they first try ... at least you got them to post ... just the size is way too small is all.
This post link will tell you how to do the graphics correctly:

Thanks a million. I'll give all of that a try and let you know how it works out. It's funny because my media machine is filling up with programs that I've only used a few times/don't use/were good for one thing.

As you can see they have a download for the LAME MP3 codec and explain how to install it ... hopefully following those instructions will work for you!
