  1. I just picked up a Phillips DVD player that can play DIVX DVD's. I have a few video files in DIVX .avi format that I just want to put on a DVD-R and play on the Phillips. Is this just a simple Data DVD burn with Nero? Just drop the files there? I heard you can't really get any menus in any authoring program on a DIVX DVD - yet. Thanks much for the help!

  3. Cool thanks. I'm surprised no authoring software has created a menu system for DIVX discs yet.

That's because it's generally up to the player to provide a menu, if you're viewing DivX/XVid/MPEG/etc. straight from disc. If you want a better menu than what the player provides, you usually end up having to author a DVD-video disc.
If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them?

  5. Yeah, that seems to make sense. Thanks.

  6. Look for a Divx Ultra certified player if you want pretty menus.

  7. I just made a data Divx disc with Nero and the Phillips 642 plays it. The menu that comes up is just very basic, kind of like a file menu in Windows. But it works.

i also have a 2 of the same divx compatible dvd players. i was so impressed with the first that i bought one for the bedroom, however recently if i burn say 8 films on a DVDR, only 4 or 5 of them will play. are there any other requirements of the file to ensure that the divx dvd will play them back? i assumed anything with the file type .avi would be ok to play?
sometimes the picture is very blocky and multicoloured and all you can hear is the sound too. kind of like a codec issue but surely you cant install codecs on your dvd player!?
any help would be greatly appreciated

B-VOPs, QPEL, GMC ... maye even VBR MP3. GSpot is your friend here.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Yes, about a million. First, AVI is a container. It can contain video and audio in any number of compression schemes (codecs). Divx/DVD players only play Divx and Xvid video, MP2, MP3, AC3 audio, and a few others. There are also advanced features of Divx and Xvid that most players don't support, GMC, QPEL, very high bitrates, frame sizes over 720x576, etc.

If you are using a Philips 642 try pressing the System/Menu button on the remote twice when this happens. This site may be useful to you:
