You could join them, but I doubt they would be in sync. Why not just re-encode the MP3 to CBR and avoid all the headaches? You could do that with VirtualDub, then join them easily afterwards with 'Append segment'.

Or you could try Virtualdub MP3 Freeze, it might be able to do it without sync problems. The latest VD says it can handle some VBR audio.

If you ever plan to encode the AVI to MPEG, you will probably have to change to CBR because few MPEG encoders can handle it.

There are many VD guides. Just look on the tool page below the program.

Why join? If you're looking for convering it all to DVD there's no need to join the AVIs - let the authoring app take care of that.

... unless you're looking for one big AVI for PC / Divx-capable device playback only, of course.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Add them to the same track and they should act like chapters. What encoder and authoring software are you planning to use ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

OK. Encode both to DVD-compliant MPEG and then in TDA, add them to the same track (one after the other). You may have to delete the chapter point created at the start of the 2nd file as some people have witnessed a slight pause (like a title change) in their DVD players when this is present.
    If in doubt, Google it.

One problem - TMPGEnc (as most encoders) doesn't like VBR audio - beware of sync probs!

That's where http://members.dodo.net.au/~jimmalenko/ExtractAudio.htm and/or configuring TMPGEnc to use toolame and SSRC for audio come in handy. Both usually circumvent any VBR MP3 problems.
    If in doubt, Google it.

    Why VCD ?

Why be content with the milk when you can have the whole cow ?

well i've saved the audio again as a wave so do i now go to tmp express and add both the files or just add 1 file and use the wave for the audio and what do i save it as, if i add 1 file and save as dvd then its going to be 4.2GB for just 1 of the files.

You need to learn how to configure tmpgenc xpress to use a bitrate so that both files will fit. https://www.videohelp.com/calc.htm should assist you with this, or you should just be able to tell xpress to use 50% of the disc capacity (so encode to a file around 2.1GB) for each file.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Why re-encode to XVID if you want this on DVD ? It means you'll have to re-encode again if you want it playable on a non-divx-compatible settop.

If you wanted one big AVI, redwudz nailed it days ago:

Why not just re-encode the MP3 to CBR and avoid all the headaches? You could do that with VirtualDub, then join them easily afterwards with 'Append segment'.
There never had to be any conversion of video at all if this is all you wanted.

If you truly want this on DVD, output as DVD-compliant MPEG-2 and be done with it.
    If in doubt, Google it.
