hi, Is there any automatic freeware that could join two AVI movies together so no one could notic the movie was split or joined? also could a .rar file be an .avi or something? I found a site to conver Avi, Divx and Xvid to DVD at http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/convert_avi_to_dvd.cfm

VirtualDub can join most AVI type files by using the 'Append' function. If all the files are in sequence, it can join them more or less automatically.

A .rar file can be about any type of file. It's just a container. You would use a program like WinRAR to join and convert the individual .rar files to one single file. Or use 7-zip for a freeware program that will do about the same.

If you are wanting to convert Xvids or similar off the net to a DVD, try ConvertXToDVD. It's more or less a one click way to do that and works very well for most files of that type.

    And welcome to our forums.

Use Gspot 2.70 and it will tell you the type of file and which codecs it uses, including audio information. You will have to extract the file from the RAR container first, though.

Most Xvids off the net use MP3 audio and often MP3 VBR audio, which may cause problems with joining. AC3 I usually demux out, then add it back in later while authoring the DVD. Most AC3 shouldn't need converting to be DVD compliant.

Most two part videos are VCD types, which with a change to the audio can be DVD compliant already. VCD uses 44.1Khz sample rates, while DVDs need 48Khz rates.

If you look to the upper left on this page for 'WHAT IS' DVD or VCD, you will see the DVD and VCD specifications and formats.

If the files contain MP3 VBR audio and VirtualDub choke, you could always try VirtualDub MP3 freeze (see link below)

    http://download.videohelp.com/download/vdub_mp3_freeze.zip

In "MY" experience this will join all AVI files with VBR and "I" have never had any problems with the resulting file (note the emphasis on my and i)

You can then throw this file at ConvertxtoDvd and Hey presto - a DVD
    Don't worry.......we'll be alright...

Do you mean Gspot won't identify the videos or the Gspot program won't open? Usually a non video file will just say 'Unknown file type'. Check the extensions for the video type files. If you haven't done this, go to any folder, 'Tools>Folder Options>View' and uncheck 'Hide extensions for known file types'. Otherwise you can't see the true extensions of a file.

Sorry, I forgot you are using Vista. But in my version of Vista Home Premium, I just go to 'Control panel', select 'Classic View' then 'Folder Options>View' and uncheck the box there to unhide the file extensions.

I scratched my XP disc somehow the first week I had it. But I was able to buff it out with some white toothpaste and a few cotton balls. It took about an hour, but I was able to read it again. I immediately made a backup with Clone CD.

Hide extensions for known file types is checked. Is that the one? What is the best guide to convert from AVI to DVD using TMPGEnc and TMPGEnc to author? I rather use several steps then one program that will do an convert in one button

As redwudz mentioned, try ConvertXtoDVD. It is really quite good. Or for free, install Avisynth and use FAVC to create mpeg2 DVDs. FAVC uses the higher quality HC encoder, at the expense of speed.

Guides for TMPGEnc and TDA are on the tool page for each program, near the bottom. <<<<<

Make sure you UNCHECK the 'Hide extensions....'

redwudz, Did you get my PM? If there is two parts of a movie split in half with each part having audio, how do i join them as AC3? I have already Demuxed out the audio but converted it to AC3 first. I used ffmpeggui to convert it and used VirtualDubMod to Demux. I am converting the first part now to DVD format. What should i do after the re-encoding of both parts that i want to join together with the sperate audios?
