Subtitle should not depend on the codec at all. No error at all? No output either?

You mean that you load an avi, press generate data source and it only shows a video stream? No subtitles, no audio?

first of all, thanks for replying, i really appreciate it.
that test u want me to run sounds like to test the video, like if it has the subtitle stream or not.
and i know the videos do have the subtitle streams because those were the exact same videos that i extracted the subtitles before it stopped working.
    so that cant be it.
but tell me what gspot is

    If it helps...

Most video-related software, including AVIMux_GUI, rely on Window's components and various DirectShow filters. If something is missing or broken, AVIMux_GUI probably can't/won't detect or handle the sub stream.

I *think* kschang's question, re: the results of opening the file in GSpot, was really asking for more detailed information about the type of video file you're working with, & what files were used in reading that video, so that suggestions could be made.

Anyway, FWIW & all, audio/video codecs decode the audio/video streams, while the sub portion is demuxed/split, read, displayed using separate filters like the vobsub files.

Can't see how or why AVIMuxGUI would rely on dshow filters.

The only other app I can think of that would work is Media Player Classic. File-->Save Subtitle.
