I've read most of the topics here and although they seemed to answer a lot of my questions I decided to write what my problem was and see if anyone has had anything similar happen to them. I'm a noob when it comes to burning dvds and you can probably tell =/

anyways, I recently got a dvd video in the mail which was burned as a DVD-R. the problem is that I have an old standalone dvd player which does not read -R but +R instead, and that's ONLY if they've been burned with "dvd x copy" which i don't have. what I tried first was copying the movie into my PC (all the files inside. it was only like 3gb) and then burn it on a +R as data using nero. I found out it was a waste of a blank since my player didn't even recognize the +R i had just burned. so now I'm thinking that the software is what i should be concerned about rather than the media.

I gave it another try but this time i ripped the video as an iso and burned it with dvddecrypter also on a +R, but again, when tested on the player it didn't recognize it either. I don't want to use "dvd x copy" because i know its off the market and a bit hard to find, but can anyone help me make this movie playable on my standalone player? I've installed dvd clone, dvd shrink and dvd decrypter, but the problem was never ripping the video.

I thank anyone in advance who can be able to point me the right direction as to how to make this work on my standalone player.

Do other +R DVDs work on your player? Ones you transcoded with DVDShink perhaps? That would tell you the player recognizes the DVD and media alright.

Does the DVD play on your computer? Converting it to a data DVD would not play on a lot of DVD settop players unless they can play an MPEG and you had it converted as that, not a VOB on a data disc.

What is your burner make and model and your settop player?

There are just too many variables without more information.

I tested another +R disc but the player did not recognize it, and i don't know which software it was used with since a friend did it and for sure wasn't with dvd x copy. I have not used dvd shrink to rip the video yet although i do have it installed, i only used dvddecrypter to rip the image and then burn it right away.

yes, the dvd plays on my PC but i did not know about that second part

I have an HP dvd-r/rw and the player i use on my PC is intervideoWINDVD (is that what you meant by settop player?) oh and my standalone player is a samsung that was purchased around 2000

thanks for replying, hope that helps a bit

Sorry that was for DVD-r media.

    According to this list >
    http://www.dvd-makers.com/public/654.cfm

The Samsung 611 is compatible with DVD+rw
    but not DVD+r's.

Oh no, I'm not having a very good day!
I read the list wrong. The Samsung 611 is
compatible with both media. (I think I'll go
    to bed now!)

I think the problem is your standalone player. If you haven't successfully used a burned DVD in it, you may be wasting your time; (Apparently the only ones that ever worked were made with DVD x copy) Especially when some players are down to $30-40US.

I suggested DVDShrink only for testing the player by backing up a known good commercial DVD. That way you would know it's a player problem, not something wrong with the DVD you got in the mail.

I would try the DVD that was mailed on another standalone player, one in a store, maybe, and buy the player that works. (After a little research on it. )

thanks deckard8 and everyone else for helping. I guess I will have to settle for dvd x copy, I think a friend of mine has it so i'll be asking him to copy the movie for me. either way i'm planning on getting a sony that reads + and - R real soon.

    thanks a lot guys
