  1. I'm a newbie. What I need to do is convert the .AVI files I have into something I could burn into a DVD-R and play it on my DVD player. The .AVI files I'll be using have AC3. Convertion speed is not a problem because I could leave the PC on all night. Picture quality is important to me. Secondary, is to be able to use AC3 instead of just transforming it into regular stereo.

After doing some research in this website, I find that the majority of you are using TMPGENC. Some recommend DIKO. Based on your experience, which one would you recommend?

    Thanks.

Use virtualdub to demux the AC3 audio for later use. Encode just the video with tmpgenc, then author with tmpgenc DVD author.

I like DIKO, but after the latest upgrade the file that I converted have audio sync problem, and I can't figure out how to fix it. It is slightly easier to use compare to TMPGENC.

I switch to TMPGENC, no audio problem, but the file size is a bit large and the quality isn't as good (for example, sub titles are blurred... probably some settings I have to play with to make it better)

I think TMPGENC is more powerful but harder to use correctly.

I'm not quite sure what you're saying. Are you saying use virtualdub to convert the AC3 sound into a file. Then use tmpgenc to convert the video. Then use tmpgenc_dvd_author to combine those 2 files into the DVD?

yep. If the AC3 file is compliant, then you don't need to do anything to it except seperate it (demux) from the avi, then use it when you author. Have tmpgenc output an elementary video stream, and use tmpgenc DVD author to bring the video stream and ac3 file back together afterwards. As pepsei pointed out, you need to get tmpgenc's setting right to get the best results, but that holds for any encoder.

If you have 2 channel AC3, you could try VSO DivxToDVD

  7. If you own a copy of CCE, than use DIKO. Otherwise stick with Tmpgenc. The free encoder in DIKO is not as good.
