  1. friends,
I have some of my VHS, which i want to convert it to DVD. I have a pc with firewire (iLink) and a Handycam of Sony Mini DV model no. DCR-HC90E. and a VCP.
I have a capture card also of Pinnacle PCTV plus. But it captures the poor quality, SO i dont wanna go with it.

Can any one please help me to convert the VHS cassettes to DVD with the high quality?
    Please indicate step by step.
    Thanks in Advance

  2. I started out converting my VHS tapes to DVD using a capture card and various software programs. After much frustration and a lot of money for software that was at best marginal I finally got smart and bought a DVD recorder which does a better job of capture and in one third or less the time.

i would capture it at 480 by 240 then load it into virtual dub and use the temporal smother filter then frame serve to tmpgenc and go with it, if its crappy video you aint gonna make it look much better but the temporal smother usually works for me with vhs captures.

do not use that junk that comes with handycam, I have one too, use the 3 ended cable (red, white, yellow) that turns into one end, quarter jack for yellow video plug on the side of the camera. Plug the composite end into the adapter that should have come with the card, also use the software that came with the card to capture to your pc, make sure you have all the settings correct when capturing, most cards these days have a DVD preset.
Hook a VCR up to the card record and burn.

Your capture card might not be the issue here. According to your computer details, you're running a dual-boot ME/XP system on a single 40g hard drive. Capturing to the same drive where your OS resides can be dicey at best, even more so if that drive has 2 OSs partitioning space between them.

My system is slower than yours (1.3 Celeron) with less RAM (256m). And, I also have a dual-boot system -- 98SE/XP. But, I have two 40g hard drives. Hard drive #1 is partitioned roughly in half with 98SE on one part and XP on the other. The 2nd hard drive is formatted NTFS and is blank ... except for what I capture to it. It is a dedicated capture-only drive. And of course, DMA is enabled on both drives.

My VHS captures (especially now that I discovered a "tweak" fix for anomalies on my Hauppauge PVR-150 capture card) are quite good. To my eye, they look no different than ordinary TV looks when burned to DVDs.

In any case, assuming your computer stats listed are correct, the solution might be only one more hard drive away. It's worth a shot. Besides, if you do any capturing at all (with any capture hardware/software), it's best to keep captured stuff separate from the OS drive.

    Good luck.
