What in hours are the amounts of Video that can be transfered onto a 4.7 gig dvd and a dual layer dvd

  2. Hard to say. The amount is purely a function of the bitrate. Dropping to something like 352x288 (I can't remember if 288 is right for PAL) will allow you to drop the bitrate. In return, more video will fit. How much material do you have?

Yup, in VCD quality, 6-7 hrs on a single layer DVD is possible.

This is wrong IMO. If you want 4.7 g calculate the average bitrate to match this size without shrinking. Well 3 hours motorbike (read high action) 4:3 fullscreen PAL probably interlaced in one 4.7 DVD full D1 res will result in bad quality IMO. The suggestion is either use 2x 4.7 DVDs (or DL if you can burn it) or half D1 resolution.
There are other approaches that can be used as motion adaptive deinterlacing and motion adaptive bluring in avisynth, but looking at your first post you will have hard time learning all this stuff.

  6. I imagine 3 hours would be no sweat for dual layer. And you could get good results for 3 hours on a DVD-5 if you do it right.
