  1. I got a Pioneer 108, the first two days worked fine, burning at 12x on 8x DVD media, on the third day, it stoped burning, it would stop at 3%, I tried from removing and replacing Nero, to reinstalling XP with only Nero and basic Antivirus software, and still nothing.

I tried connecting the burner to the first IDE channel on the board, I have the Pinoeer as master.

The burner only burns at 6x with no problem, but no higher. I tried different media, I was using Pro Disc and now Ridata.

On the box said, for faster burning use an 80 pin cable, so I got it, and the first 3 DVDs burned at 12x and on the forth one, it froze at 33% I have to force quit Nero and restart, so the computer can eject the DVD.

I sent the Pioneer 108 back for a replacement, and got a new one from a different store, Pioneer A08 which is the same I think, the first two DVDs burned at 12x after that, same story, it burns only 3%.

Any ideas? I have an old MOBO, could that be the problem, I have an ECS MOBO (it sucks) Athlon XP 2400 with 1GB of RAM speed 3200.

Thanks in advanced for any suggestions.

First off i have an ecs 7s5a motherboard with xp2100+ and sd-r5112 toshiba burner and i swear by it's great performance ! However results do vary, as they say. You didn't mention if there were any error messages. Do you have the burner on the same channel as the primary hard drive ? Try the burner as the only drive on the second channel and make sure DMA is enabled. Does your burner have the latest firmware upgrade ? I have a variety of vintage burners (+ and -) which keep me in business because they run the best recommended firmware. Do you run a good defragger (Diskeeper) ? Last, if you can, load only the OS and the burning app to see if there is a software conflict. I live by Nero 5.5.10.50 but you may be using a newer version (6.0 and up).

Is it the same file that keeps getting stuck when you try to burn it? If so, try burning a different file (one that you previously burned) and see how that goes. You might want to update your firmware as well - I also have a 108 and I updated it with firmware 1.10 - they're up to v 1.18 now. Mine is working fine w 1.10 so I haven't bothered to update it.

If the file is not the problem, then try updating the firmware: http://www.pioneeraus.com.au/computer/firmware.html

If you lower the burn speed can you get a successful burn? If so then maybe your computer is unable to keep the buffer full at the higher speed and hanging, and there may be something else going on eating up resources .... As Free is Better said .... you should try defragging, and keeping both the hard drives on the same cable (channel) and the burner on the other channel. Could be your ram has an address failure (use Memtest86 to check). Try a different file as maldb suggested. Just some ideas.

  5. shouldn't be the system the problem.
try to upgrade the firmware, if no luck, then make sure DMA is enabled, if no luck, try different media, if no luck, try different burning software, if still no luck.....

that's it, you,ve tried everything. maybe it's the the ANTIVIRUS on background....remove that shit, no shit in background is the best.

I have recently purchased a Pioneer 108D (OEM) and flashed the drive
with F/W from Gradius v1.18 and the burner is working like a charm.

Goto gradius.com and download the file
    "DVR-A08/108D drive into a true DVR-A08DX/108DX".
    (support DVD-R @ 16x max and DVD-RW @ 4x max)
Another benefit of this F/W is automatic bookmark for +R blanks.

After unzipping the files (3) place them in the Folder bearing your
name in the Documents and Settings Folder.

    IMPORTANT Note:
Make sure the "Intel Application Accelerator" is not installed.

Goto command prompt and "TYPE" the following command
(Note: you cannot copy and paste into Command Prompt)

    C:\Documents and Settings\blinky\>dvrflash -vf X: R8150008.110 R8150108.118

NOTE: In that command statement "X" represents your burner DRIVE letter
..eg.. D or E etc. and "blinky" represents the name that appears after
"Documents and Settings" when opening Command Prompt.

Thank you all, I tried everything you mention it's mention on this post. My primary IDE Channel is set to DMA, and it says Ultra DMA Mode 4, I currently have the Burner by it self on the primary Channel, on the secondary Channel it was set to PIO Only, I had the burner on the secondary, but I have now changed it to DMA, so it is now Ultra DMA Mode 5.

But as mention by some of you that it could be a RAM issue, on my first post I mention that I have 3200 DDR on this MOBO, but the MOBO doesn't support the RAM I have.. http://www.ecsusa.com/products/k7s5a_pro.html - could this be the problem?

I also stated that I did a CLEAN install, so I only have the basic applications such as Antivirus software, so I will turn it off as suggested by one of you.

I did a Firmware update on the previous burner I had and that didn't help.

I will defrag my HD today, I haven't done that in a while, but could this be the problem?

I did try different media, but what is crazy, is that I have a cheap BTC DVD burner and I don't have problems burning at 12X.

I have tried different files, I'm trying to backup movies.

But as one of you said, it could be that my computer cant keep up with the buffer, could this be it?

Something else I noticed, is that if I move cables around, it will burn at 12X only the first 2 DVDs.

Thanks everyone for your valuable help.
