Capturing analogue video, but files get huge if I want the best quality.
2 minutes of video takes 450 MB, output is an avi files.

It depends on what you plan to do with the video and what software and hardware you have. From the file size it sounds like you're capturing from a DV camcorder. If that's the case, the file sizes you're getting are normal.
If your final destination is DVD, if your software supports it, and if your computer is fast enough, you can try converting to MPEG2 while capturing.
