  1. To make a long, sad story short, I had changed the configuration of my Laptop to be "standard pc" to try and fix a problem. That was no solution, but the problem was later resolved with a new motherboard.

Now, I can't even remember where I did this change. Also, last time I got that far, I wasn't given the choice to go back to how it was. How do I get my laptop to behave as a laptop again? My biggest issue is that I can't get it to show battery power or warn me for low battery! This is a big problem for obvious reasons.

Also, in shut down, I have to push the on/off button at the end of the shutdown - it doesn't completely shut down automatically - it tells me "safe to turn off your conpmtur now". It'a a pain.

Anyone know how to change this without a forma/re-install of windows XP home? thx.

In XP, look in the Control Panel, under 'Power Options'. You should be able to select 'laptop' and save that scheme. Reboot and that should restore your battery indicator.

As far as the shutdown switch. You might take a look in the Microsoft Database and see if you can find an easy cure there.

If all else fails, your laptop should have came with restore discs. You should be able to restore/repair the laptop back to original. Back up your data first, though.

  3. Thanks, but it's a "deaper" issue than that. I did try that again but t's already set to laptop mode.

I spent some time last night and finally recalled where I set the Standard PC setting in the first place. Here's what I did. In device mgr I went into "computer" and it was set for whatever a laptop should be. I deleted the driver and then restarted the computer. The plug/play feature detected that it needed to re-install this so it let me choose the setting. I chose "Standard PC" because it allows some sort of fiddling with the IRQ settings.

Anyways, now that it is set for Standard PC, i can NOT delete or change the driver (there is no option to do so). I may have to do a reinstall of WinXP, but if anyone has another way that would be preferred.

    Thanks.

  4. I know I'm not supposed to "bump" but I never did see this thread make it to the front page of recent posts. Maybe the non-video threads don't even go on there. I'd swear I've seen posts from the computer forum there before though.
