  1. Hi guys,

I'm having some technical issues with my dvd burner, it's a Lite-On DVDRW SOHW-1633S. I installed in about a week ago, and i burned a couple dvd's using dvd shrink 3.2, everything went ok.

Then i tried it another day and i got an error message saying when i tried to analyze it that "DVD Shrink encountered an error and can't continue Failed to read file E:\" It says that every time i try to analyze the disc. Every once and a while it will start for a split second, say reading at 1kb, then the error will come up after another 10 seconds of no movement.

When i try to play a dvd, it will take a long time to start up, then it will be choppy for a bit and the controls will lag a whole lot. Eventually, sometimes it will play correctly, but that's rare. I can't seem to reproduce the results one way or another. I just know that there's no way it should be this annoying...

I think i have my computer specs in the profile, but just incase I am running XP, service pack 2.

Oh, and i shipped the drive back, got a replacement, and i still have the exact same problem. I installed the firmware from liteon's website to upgrade it to BS0S, which is supposedly the correct one. Could it be wrong or maybe there's a better one?

Thanks in advance for your help, i'm quite frustrated !

  2. Win XP has Win Restore function. Restore your comp to the date when you know it was working fine. This is a problem with DVD shrink and windows... So, try that else uninstall DVD shrink and reinstall it and see if that helps.

Finally, if nothing helps, reinstalling OS will!

    Cheers

  3. Thanks for the reply,

I tried to reinstall dvd shrink, and tried to use dvd decrypter too, neither worked. I'm starting to think that it must be an OS problem, because its clearly not the drive.

The system restore thing sounds like a possibliity, i'll research that a bit. I'd love to escape this without having to do an entire format c:

could it be some sort of a virus?

  4. A virus... ? Far fetched.... I dont think so.

    Test with Win Restore.
    Start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore....

Let me guess.... the disc you are trying to copy is relatively new? Maybe "The Forgotten" or "Little Black Book" or "The Village".

I'd imagine the problem is not your dvd burner (swapping it out for another one did nothing). Studios are now purposely authoring bad sectors on DVD movie discs to hinder the ability to copy. DVD decrypter has an option to import a list of the offending sectors for specific dvds so that you can rip them. There are several other programs that have workarounds for this same error, but I can't remember what they are at the moment. Just do a search on "The Forgotten" in the forum and you should find plenty of solutions for your problem.

  8. I called Lite-On tech support today, and the lady said it is a common problem for the drive to work for a little while, then progressively slow down until its unuseable. Its caused by having too many conflicting dvd programs on your OS...She said having Roxio and Nero and one or two other companies programs on the comp all at once send the drive conflicting messages on what to do.

I tried deleting both, i had nero and easy cd creator, and only putting nero back on, but it still didnt work....

Im starting to think a fresh install is the only way to go.

ps. the system restore didn't work, and no, obviously its not a scratched disk. i've tried watching/ripping/burning dvd's that i've already had success with but no luck.

    Hmmm....
At one time i remember when installing, nero would actually tell you to remove roxio programs when installing ?? i don't know about now as i have not used anything roxio in years!!!!!!!

And most people seem to have the same opinion about roxio software (including me)

I hope that going through all that works & IMO, don't install roxio anything

Sounds like a common problem that your dvd drive went into pio mode, just uninstall the ata/atapi ide channel that your burner is on and reboot so it goes back to udma2 mode.
    I think,therefore i am a hamster.

Thanks for the replies, you guys rock. Gold star to Johns0 for solving the problem once and for all, it was indeed in pio mode. changing it to Bios select in the Device manager then rebooting made it good as new.

    thanks again!
