I transfered a 90 minute Digital8 tape from my Sony TRV260 using Nero Vision. I transfered it as DVD Video, so it's automatically an MPEG-2. Without doing anything to it, it's 5.5GB. WHY?
I want to preserve the entire tape, so I'm not cutting anything out of it. However, using Nero I did divide it up into scenes, so that I could select them from the menu. Nero asks me if it can reduce the quality so that it will fit on one DVD, and even if I say "Yes", it still doesn't do it.
So, I guess my questions are:
1. Can I transfer the video so that it's smaller without reducing the quality greatly?
2. If not, what can I do to fit the MPEG-2 with menu on one DVD?
I have Adobe Premiere 6.0 also, but I'm not crazy about using it. I will if I have to. Also, I'm mainly interested in freeware, but again, I'll do what I have to.
Your help is greatly appreciated!!!

What's the audio format? If it's PCM convert the audio to AC3 and it will probably fit. This will leave your video completely intact as is.
If it still doesn't fit try capturing at 6000kbps VBR.
