  1. Hello all,

I'm using TMPGEnc to convert a divx file to an mpg so I can burn it. I'm using the High Quality tab, and I have a pretty slow processor: 300Mhz But it's telling me that it's going to take 12 HOURS! Is this normal?? Since it's divx the directions said I could use a lesser quality setting, but I'm afraid that I may see a difference in the picture. Does anyone know first of all if 12 hours is normal to convert a 150Mb file? And is there anything I can do to speed up the process? Also, will a lesser quality setting really make a big difference in picture quality?

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

  2. Bumping this up...

Alongside this request, what is the best proggie to convert DivX to MPEG.

I'm currently using TMPGEnc12A but am wondering if there's anything anyone has found that produced better quality?

  3. a way to speed the process up is to make a wav file of the audio and use that for the audio soruce in tmpge. you can do this with virtual dub
    1. go to file open the movie.

2.go to audio and click full processing mode.

3.go to file and click save wav. then name the file and click save.

  4. staind, will the audio sound lose any quality by doing this? Also, do you know approx. how much time this will save...are we talking like more than an hour or so, or just a little time?

    Thanks for you help.

  5. filefreak, back to what you were asking about a 12 hour conversion session being normal, it sounds abnormal. The question in mind is how much RAM do you have on your computer? Usually it's the amount of RAM you've got that determines greatly how long a video file takes to convert, and also whether or not you have anything else running in the background of your computer while you're converting other than the TMPGEnc program. I have a P3 500Mhz with 128 SDRAM. However, I don't use that program that you're using at all for converting my AVIs to MPEGs. I use VideoWave 4 (www.videowave.com) for that. The conversion ratio for this program is 3:1. So, for a 60 minute video file, it will take 180 minutes to convert approximately. Or, a 150MB AVI file should take about 3 hours more or less to convert. Make sure that when you're converting files, do not have anything else running in the background (i.e., anti-virus programs) of your computer.

As for improving picture quality, can't say too much about that, because I'm also wondering that myself.

    Hope that's some help.
