Thinking about buying a Panasonic stand-alone, so I would need DVD-Ram reading for editing. Also have a Liteon DVD-ROM LTD163, but I assume it won't read DVD-Ram.

  2. Which one of the three different versions of the Memorex True8x drives are you talking about?

  3. DVD-RAM drives are LG, Panasonic, Toshiba, Hitachi I think too. There may be others.

The manual didn't cover what is supported, but the I found the outside
of the box the unit came in lists this info. Doesn't mention DVD-RAM.

But in Nero InfoTool under Supported Read Features, the DVD-RAM box is checked. Can this info be trusted?

Maybe Lordsmurf's 'try one' is the solution, but I'll have to buy some first.

I have to disagree here. There are three versions of the Memorex True8x. The original was a rebadged Pioneer 107D. The second version is a rebadged NEC 2500A. The third version is a rebadged LiteOn 812S. Neither the NEC nor the LiteOn could read DVD-RAM. But, the Pioneer does support -RAM reading, and if he has the original version based on the Pioneer, then the drive should read -RAM.

While what the drive reports to Nero InfoTool cannot always be trusted, the printing on the box, especially if it's a rebadged drive like the Memorex, is oftentimes even less trustworthy.

So I ask again, which Memorex True8x is it? Or better yet, just follow these guidelines:
    - If the max. CD-write speed of your Memorex True8x is 40x, then you have a rebadged LiteOn, and you won't be able to read DVD-RAM.
    - If the max. CD-write speed of your Memorex True8x is 32x, then you have a rebadged NEC, and you won't be able to read DVD-RAM.
    - If the max. CD-write speed of your Memorex True8x is a paltry 24x, then you have a rebadged Pioneer, and it should be able to read DVD-RAM just fine.

Both the box and Nero InfoTool say 40X read and 24X write, so I guess I have the oldie but goodie rebadged Pioneer.

Thanks code65536. I shudder to think what other obscure facts are in your mind.

When I get some media I'll make a report.

  9. The Pioneer 107D reads RAM just fine.
Still a few bugs in the system...
