  1. Hi Everyone,

I recently purchased a new 25-pack spindle of Memorex DVD+R DL 8x media from CompUSA to make movie backups. I backed up a couple of films using MacTheRipper and Toast 7.1.2 using 8x to burn the discs. To my surprise, the DVDs could not be read by my seven-disc JVC DVD player.

I have been using Memorex DVD+R DL 2x media and they play on the JVC DVD player without any problems. By the way, all backups, burned on either 2x or 8x media, work on the Pioneer DVR-112D DVD burner in my Mac.

Has anyone experienced this issue? Should I just burn all media using 2X since they work on the JVC DVD player? I look forward to your comments and suggestions.

First of all, around here we recommend that people use Verbatim DVD+R DL media. If you don't do that, then inevitably you will post questions like yours - why did my burns of brand X fail? Secondly, in the past some 8x media was reported to have burn issues. While I know nothing about the 8x media you are using (except I can say without any reservations that Memorex DVDs were the biggest piece of crap media I have EVER used in my life), I can tell you that there may be some manufacturing differences between the 8x and 2x media. I would recommend that you try burning at a lower speed and see if that helps. I simply refuse to burn DL media at anything above 2.4x because that works reliably for me. In the future, do yourself a favor and stay away from crap media like Memorex and go with Verbatim.

I have a Pioneer 112D and a Matsushita UJ-846. Burning from an image (made by DVD Imager from the video_ts folder) at 1 or 2 x on the Matsu drive seems to be the only thing that works for me.

Verbatims are made with a spacer between the dye layers to fix the distance between layers.

Just to throw in another viewpoint, I don't burn DLs any
faster than 4x on my Pioneer 110. Faster and there's a
    hiccup at the layer change.

When I worked for Apple we would recommend that folks burn audio CDs at no faster than 1/2 the fastest media speed or 1/2 the fastest burner speed, whichever was less. Seems like a good practice to follow with video DVDs, as well.

re: Verbatim. Amen. I do find that Memorex single-layer DVDs are okay for data only (as long as you burn at less than the max speed (8x discs at 6x in my iMac seem to work fine). I'm just using up old ones and have a spindle of Verbatims waiting in the wings.

I rarely burn video DVDs any more; MP4(H264) with my iPod or AppleTV do it all for me. (But that's a different thread...)

The spec sheet that comes with the discs I bought showed this diagram. Keeping the distance between dye layers uniform is supposed to allow for higher burn speeds. They are much more difficult to make than a single layer, hence the higher price.

I was under the distinct impression that *all* DL media is basically made this way. Otherwise, there would be no chance for the laser to stay in focus. Is verbatim claiming that they are the only ones doing this?

They all have spacers. I don't see any such claim from Verbatim. That's why I asked for an explanation.

I think they are all made that way, but Verbatims seem to be the disc of choice for dual layer. Fortunately the local Office Max's carry them, so I don't have to mail order.

  11. I tried burning the Memorex DVD+R DL discs at 2x but they still will not play on my JVC 7-disc dvd player. The 2.4x versions of the Memorex DVDs work, though. I tried playing the 8x burned Memorex DVD+R DL discs on a newer Sony DVD player and they worked. It looks like I need to get a newer DVD burner or buy 2.4x only DVD+D DL discs. Thanks to everyone for your replies.
