I recently purchased a Memorex Internal Dual Format DVD Recorder. The drive seems to work fine when using appropriate software with it, however, it doesn't seem to be communicating with Windows very well. For instance, whatever disk is in when the computer is turned on, windows explorer will only recognize that disk. No matter how many times I open the drive and put a new disk in, it will not refresh that there is a new disk in. Another example. When I burn a CD with RealPlayer, I need to put a disk in, then open the software. If I have the software open, then put the disk in, the computer will still insist there is no disk in the drive. I don't believe the computer knows that it is capable of recording DVDs as well, because when I try to back files up as a data disk, the computer won't recognize the DVD as a recordable disk. Otherwise, the drive works. It plays CDs and DVDs fine. It records via software fine. I just can't get Windows to recognize the drive and to refresh it.

I hope all of this made sense.

Sounds like this drive was a replacement for another drive.

There are a few things you can try. First, open device manager and delete/remove the drive and the IDE channels. Then reboot, windows will reinstall the drivers for the IDE channels and the burner. Second, any burning software that was installed prior to the burner being installed, most likely needs to be removed and reinstalled. The reason being, most burning software scans for burners upon installation. If you change burners, they often aren't recognized properly.
