I have a new SonyKD28DX200U and a new Toshiba SD 34VBSB vhs/dvd player. I have managed to record programs on the vhs but when I shut down the TV the program stops recording on the vhs recorder and leaves a semi blank screen with no sign of the program which was being recorded. OK when the TV was on. Can anybody please suggest a cure

Don't know if this is applicable, but when you turn off your TV do you also turn off your Cable or Satelite feed? if so, you are probably just recording your TVs channel 3 feed, which is normally a blank screen or white noise.

your post doenst make a lot of sence.. you say you turn off the tv.. yet when you do there is a "simi blank screen"
it looks like what you are doing is trying to record a dvd onto the vhs in that unit.. and you have it hooked up through your tv.. so you have the dvd out of player going in to your tv and the out puts on the tv going to inputs on the player so it will record.. is that right? if so.. well thats y you cant turn off the tv.. its gotta be on for it to pass through. -
Yes I have been leaving TV on but awkward if you are recording late at night and have to leave TV on all night(think you were kidding Heywould)
I havnt got Cable etc but Freeview is installed in the TV. The aerial which usually goes in the VCR
on my old system now goes into the TV according to diagrams for the Sony. Does anybody know the Web site for Sony Technical help. Thanks -
Get the freeview box connection that goes to your tv and unhook it and put it straight to your recorder and have your recorder going to your tv.

Sorry, when I play back the vhs tape I find that at the time I switched off the TV is the time that the program (from TV)stopped recording on the tape when I play it back. Could be that I have 3 scarts on the back of the TV and two on the VHS / DVD(DVD player only) and I am getting them in wrong sockets but I dont think so Have tried different combinations. I have always been able to turn TV off and record on VHS on other VHS and TVs before
I had this set up. -
You've got things hooked up incorrectly.
ICBM target coordinates:
26° 14' 10.16"N -- 80° 16' 0.91"W -
Ah yes SLK001 but I have tried different combinations and as I mentioned the diagram in the sony set up shows the aerial going into the TV and a loop going from the TV into where the aerial should go in the VCR/DVD player which is norm. If Im making sense. The Freeview is built into the TV johnsD. Very good picture!

Every VCR I've ever had, had the Antenna/Aux/Cable going into the VCR and then from the VCR to the TV.
Try that and see if it works. -
As i read it freeview is a pay cable box and its built in your tv?

no,the freeview box is integrated into the tv.
you cant record without having the tv on,--power to the freeview internal box.
only thing you could do is buy another freeview box,or you should have bought a tv without the freeview box integrated.
its not meant to work if the tv is OFF -
It looks to me as if when you switch off the TV, the freeview receiver is also turned off. This means that if you wish to record with the TV off, your only option is to put the antenna direct to the VCR, then out of the VCR into the TV. That way you can record from the VCR's internal tuner.
The only other option is that the freeview receiver in the TV only ouputs on one particular scart when the TV is off, and you are connected to the wrong one (or I suppose something could be faulty).
For our NON-UK members, free view is Free Digital Terrestial TV. -
Thanks for all info. Freeview is a UK free option of a number of TV and radio stations which once you have bought the box there is no monthly rental for these extra stations. Yes its built into this Sony TV.
No Jim this is a new TV and a new VHS/DVD player and as you say its not correctly hooked up So in the morning will try different set ups. Im sure Sony must have a Website for help but cant find it Back in the morning. Goodnight all and thanks. Yes Im a newbie but an old 80 -
I also have a Sony TV with built in free view.
From what I understand, when you turn the TV off, that is it....errrmm.......it's off!
You can record from the freeview side of things whilst watching a different terrestrial analogue channel but when the power is off, then the set is dead.
Not particularly brilliant thinking on Sony's part, but logical nonetheless.
The only answer is a separate freeview box....then you can watch one freeview channel whilst taping another. -
Looks as though we are back to Heywould3 who replied to my posting in 3 secs and said `stop turning off the tv` Seems he was right !!!
I can see now the logic in having to have the tv on with a built in freeview Dont suppose the tv likes being switched off when its supplying the video cassette recorder!!!! Cant understand Sony. The answer would seem to be a freeview box. At least I should be able to watch and record a freeview channel as you say Wigan Guy
Will try moving cables to put antenna direct to video and so on.
Many thanks all
